실용음악 정체성 고찰과 학과 신설 후 2000년대 초반까지의 상황

Abstract

본고의 목적은 실용음악과/전공이 국내 신설된 지 30년이 넘는 시점에서 정체성의 문제는 없는지 그러한 원인과 보완의 방향성은 무엇인지 연구함에 있다. 아울러 신설 초창기에 대한 정보가 미비함에 신설 후 2000 년대 초반까지의 상황을 현장 경험을 통해 설명하였다. 정체성의 첫 번째이유는 처음 용어 선택에서 시작되며 즉, ‘실용음악’이란 본질과 다른 시대가 지난 클래식 음악사 용어에서 오는 모호성과 이는 영문 표기인‘Applied Music’이란 잘못된 용어의 선택까지 이어졌다. 이러한 모호성과생소함은 신설 초창기에 다양한 학과/전공 명칭의 신설로 이어지다 차츰‘실용음악’으로 통일되어 가지만 교육에 있어선 여전히 학교마다 접근이 다른 정체성과 광범위성을 갖고 있다. 대학은 학술용어 선택에 있어서세계 대학과 학계 통용성과 사례를 살펴보며 해야 하나 이러함에 미진함이 있었음을 보며, 이에 서구 대학들의 관련 학과/전공들은 어떠한 명칭을 사용하며 세부 전공으로 분류하는지 조사하고 국내실정에 적합한 방향성은 무엇인지도 제시하고자 한다. 아울러 국내 논문들과 본 연구자의현장 경험을 통해 학과/전공의 정체성의 이유는 무엇인지도 조사한다. 서구 대학들의 관련 학과/전공들은 일반적으로 명칭을 ‘Jazz Studies’를주로 사용하며 이외에도 ‘Popular Music,’ ‘Commercial Music,’ 그리고 ‘Jazz & Pop’을 사용하고 있다. 그리고 ‘Music Industry’(음악산업) 관련 전공은‘Commercial Music’의 세부 전공으로 넣기도 하나 대부분 독립적 학과/전공으로 분류함을 볼 수 있다. 이에 국내 상황을 고려해 학과/전공의 명칭과 분류는 실용음악계열/학과 내에 ‘대중음악’(Popular Music), ‘재즈음악’(Jazz Studies), 그리고 ‘음악산업’(Music Industry) 전공 분류로 전문화함을 제안하는 바이다. 아울러 대학은 학문의 장이기에 실기강조 교육외에도 학술적 교육과의 조화를 이끌어야 하며 교육자 자격 역시 가능한타 예술 단과대학들의 기준처럼 이에 상응하는 것이 바람직하다 Marking more than 30 years of the establishment of the departments/majors related to ‘Popular Music’ in Korea, this study aims to investigate any problems with its identity and the causes and improvement directions. As there is insufficient information on the initial stage, this study also explained the situation from the establishment to the early 2000s through hands-on experiences. The first reason for identity begins with the term first selected. In other words, the essence of “Gebrauchsmusik” and the ambiguity coming from the term of classical music history, which was different in the past, led to using the wrong term of ‘Applied Music’ in English. Such ambiguity and unfamiliarity were resolved over time through the standardized term of “Applied Music” after using different names for the department/major in the early days. In education, however, each university still has their own identity and scope with different approaches. Considering that Korean universities have failed to look into the common uses and cases among international universities and academies when it comes to selecting the academic term, this study intends to investigate what terms are used and what concentrations are offered by similar departments/majors at Western universities and suggest proper future directions according to the domestic circumstances. In addition, this study explores the reasons for the identity of the department/major based on Korean studies and the researcher’s hands-on experiences. Most of the relative departments/majors at Western universities use the name of “Jazz Studies,” and some others are called ‘Popular Music,’ ‘Commercial Music,’ and ‘Jazz & Pop.’ In addition, some universities provide the major of ‘Music Industry’ as a concentration within ‘Commercial Music,’ while most of them have classified it as an independent department/major. Therefore, this study suggests specializing the courses/departments of ‘Applied Music’ in Korea by classifying into ‘Popular Music,’ ‘Jazz Studies,’ and ‘Music Industry.’ In addition, since universities are academic communities, they need to provide both practice-oriented education and academic education in a balanced way. It is also ideal that they require educators’ qualification to meet the standard requirements of other art colleges.
