아크람 칸(Akram khan)의 작품˂데쉬(Desh)˃의 미학적 특성 연구

Abstract

The goal of this thesis was to research about the aesthetic characteristics that appear in the choreographer Akram Khan’s (1974 - ) contemporary choreography work <Desh> and used the research to analyse the aesthetic characteristics with a focus on “feeling” and “form” present in the piece. During unsettled times, famous scholars from different countries all defined the concept of “aesthetic” differently. The German philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714 - 1762) first introduced the concept of Aesthetic in 1750 as a division of philosophy that studied the relationship between humans and aesthetics worldwide. Later, German psychologist and theorist of aesthetics Max Dessoir (1866 - 1947) separated the field of aesthetics and art as independent disciplines and made the two compatible by theory. Suzanne K. Langer (1895 - 1982), an American philosopher theorist on aesthetics of dance, shaped the philosophy of arts through 8 different types of arts which includes music, painting, architecture, sculpture, dance, literature, theater, and film, and emphasized the connection between the form of art and the form of feelings nested within. This is identical to how Akram Khan expresses feelings through the “body” while dancing. Accordingly, this thesis explores the aesthetic characters of “form” and “feeling” apparent in Akram Khan’s work <Desh>. Akram Khan’s <Desh> portrays the “identity crisis” in where he tells the story of finding his own roots. The aesthetic characteristic of “form” in <Desh> can be expressed as either production or narration and while both forms carry out their own respective roles, they also harmonize together and enthralls the audience through a smooth production. Therefore, the aesthetic characteristics of western and eastern dance moves appear simultaneously for choreographies that embrace both western and eastern features. It adheres to the public’s aesthetic psychology in the aesthetic aspect. And if it conforms to the public’s standard of beauty, it can only be natural, harmonious, and beautiful. In terms of emotions, his work generally penetrates “emotions” through physical expressions from start to finish which is also the beauty and unique quality of most of his pieces. Accordingly, Akram Khan’s work can be understood as expressing aesthetics rather than feelings. Therefore, the aesthetic characteristic identified in Akran Kham’s work <Desh> is an aesthetic expression of the feelings perceived while dancing.| 본 논문은 안무가 아크람 칸(Akram Khan, 1974년 - )의 현대무용작품 <데쉬(Desh)>를 중심으로 아크람 칸의 작품 <데쉬>에 나타난 미학적 특성을 연구하는 것을 목표로 하였으며, 작품에 대한 미적 연구을 통해 중점적으로 작품에 나타난 ‘감정’과 ‘형식’의 미적 특성을 분석하였다. 부동한 시기, 각 나라의 유명한 학자들은 ‘미학(美學)’의 개념에 대해 서로 다르게 정의하였다. 미학(Aesthetic)은 인간과 세계의 미적 관계를 연구하는 철학의 한 분야로 독일 철학자 바움가르텐(Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, 1714년 - 1762년)에 의해 1750년에 처음으로 제기 되었으며, 이어 독일 심리학자이자 미학자인 데스와르(Dessoir, M, 1867년 - 1947년)가 미학과 예술학을 독립적인 학과로 분리시킨 후 이론적으로 두 학과를 병립시켰다. 미국의 무용미학자이자 철학자인 수잔 랭거(Susanne K.Langer, 1895년 - 1982년)가 예술철학을 음악, 회화, 건축, 조각, 무용, 문학, 연극, 영화 여덟 가지의 예술로 구현하였으며 미적 연구에서 예술의 형식과 예술형식에 내재된 감정형식의 연결을 강조하였다. 이는 아크람 칸이 무용에서 ‘신체’를 통해 감정을 표현하는 것과 일치하다. 이에 본 논문에서는 아크람 칸의 작품 <데쉬>에 나타난 ‘형식’과 ‘감정’의 미적 특성을 살펴보았다. 아크람 칸의 작품 <데쉬>는 ‘정체성 문제’, 즉 아크람 칸이 자신의 뿌리를 찾아가는 과정에 대한 작품이다. 작품 <데쉬>는 미적 특성의 ‘형식’은 춤 형식의 연출과 서사 형식의 표현으로 나뉘는데, 두 가지 형식은 각자 맡은 부분이 있으면서도 서로 조화를 이루었으며, 원활한 연출에 사람의 마음을 사로잡을 수 있었다. 따라서 서양과 동양이라는 두 가지 요소를 동시에 갖춘 춤 동작은 서양 춤의 특징과 동양 춤의 동작에 대한 미적 특징이 동시에 나타났다. 미학적 측면에서는 대중의 미적 심리에 부합한다. 대중의 미에 부합한다면 자연스럽고 조화롭고 아름다울 수밖에 없다. 감정의 측면에서 그의 작품은 전반적으로 처음부터 끝까지 신체적 표현으로 ‘감정’을 관통했다고 할 수 있데, 이는 그의 대부분의 작품이 지닌 특징이자 매력이다. 그래서 그의 작품은 감정을 표현하는 것이라기보다는 미를 표현한 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 아크람 칸의 작품 <데쉬>에서 도출한 미학적 특징은 바로 무용 중 감정에 대한 그의 미적 표현이다.
