천문의 상징 기호에 대한 이해: 무속의 상징물 명도를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 무속의 명도에 나타나는 천문기호 양상을 통시적으로 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 천문기호의 변화와 의미를 분석하고, 더 나아가 명도에 내재된 무속의 신념체계를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 명도는 무한한 우주의 세계를 표상한 천궁(天穹)의 상징물이다. 명도의 천문기호는 일월(日月)과 북두칠성(北斗七星)을 기본구성으로 하며, 이 기호는 문양과 글자로 나타난다. 이 외에 범자(梵字)･화문(花紋)･신수(神獸) 등의 기호도 명도 안에 담겨져 있음이 확인된다. 천문의 기호가 전달하는 메시지는 보편적인 기호로, 혹은 특정 시대적 상황을 반영하는 특수한 기호로 표상된다. 문화사적으로 명도의 것과 유사한 천문기호는 고구려 고분(古墳)에 처음 나타난다. 천문기호가 언제부터 무속에 수용되었는지는 명확하게 밝히기는 어려우나, 문헌기록을 통해 보건대 신라시대 제의에 궁면(穹面)의 거울이 사용되었던 것으로 보아, 적어도 그 역사를 신라까지 거슬러 올라갈 수 있으리라 본다. 명도의 천문기호에는 도교적인 세계관인 우주적인 원리와 수명장수를 기원해 주는 사상이 반영되어 있다. 또한 명도에는 범자와 불교설법의 화두로 여기는 화문 등의 불교적 세계관을 반영한 형태도 나타난다. 명도는 신앙자에게 하늘과 소통을 위한 기원대상으로, 인간 삶의 지속을 위한 매개물로 인식된다. 또한 명도는 성속의 전환이 가능하게 한 성물(聖物)로서, 제장을 영원불멸한 세계의 중심이 되게 하고 신의 현현 및 지존의 권위 표상으로 인식된다. 무속에서 명도는 보편적으로 신의 얼굴로 상징되지만, 한편으로는 명도 각각에 천계 신의 이름을 부여하여 천상계와의 관련성을 강조하기도 한다. 무속에서는 명도를 통해 끊임없이 천상계와 소통하고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 타종교의 세계관을 수용하여 변화하는 과정 속에서도 무속만의 고유한 신념체계를 명도에 반영시켜 지속해 온 것으로 이해된다. This research examines diachronically the modalitiy of astronomical symbol represented in sky disk, Myongdo(明圖). Based on this, this research analyze the change of astronomical symbol and meanings and furthermore establish other religions’ world󰠏 views, changes and continuance between intrinsic shamanistic belief system. Firstly, the sky disk lasts in Korean culture as a symbol of sky which represents the infinite universe. As a result of diachronic analysis of the sky disk’s modality, astronomical symbol marks are basically consist of the patterns of the sun, the moon and the Big Dipper(日·月·星辰) besides they imply various world󰠏views and have been handed down through some changes Secondly, the message which the sky disk’s symbol delivers represents as an universal symbol, or a special symbol that reflects particular times. In addition, the sun, the moon, and the stars of sky disk are encoded to the faithful and are recognized as targets of praying and mediums of all creations’ origin for continuation of human lives and longevity. Sky disk is as a sacred symbol which can change sacredness and purification, it makes ritual space the center of immortal world. Lastly, sky disk contains the idea of praying for a cosmic principle which is Taoistic view of world and longevity. Sky disk represents Sanskrit and flower patterns of Buddhistic world󰠏view. Like this, in shamanism, it shows that the celestial space and human constantly interact through the sky disk. Additionally, it is analyzed that Korean shamanism tries to make changes by accepting parts of other religious views of the world and still maintains intrinsic belief system of shamanism.
