2010년대 후반 한국형 회사원 소설에 나타난 청년 의식 연구 –김세희와 장류진 소설을 중심으로–

Abstract

본 논문에서는 2010년대 후반을 사는 2~30대 여성 회사원의 직장 생활을 사실적으로 묘사한 김세희와 장류진 소설을 분석한다. 해당 소설들은 일하는 여성의 회사 생활과 생존 체험을 통해 청년기의 핵심 과제들을 다룬다. 회사가 인물의 핵심적 삶의 배경이며, 인물들은 회사가 대표하거나 대리하고 있는 한국 사회의 모순적 본질을 인지하고 자신의 취약함을 여실히 확인한다. 청년 여성이 겪는 인간관계와 여가, 연애, 결혼 등의 삶 전반을 다루는 것도 주요한 특징이다. 단, 삶에 대한 깊은 성찰보다는 표면적인 일상과 즉흥적인 감정을 나열하는 생활기록에 가까운 양상을 띤다. 부당하고 비인간적이고 불합리한 직장 시스템 안에서 인물들은 자책과 체념에 빠져 자신의 경험을 부정하거나 옆의 누군가를 적대시하고 증오하고, 일하는 일상과 일하지 않는 일상을 철저히 배제하면서 삶을 분리하고, 문화적 취향을 누리며 작은 쾌락을 얻는 일에 몰두한다. 이 소설들은 직장 생활과 노동을 통해 자기실현이 불가능해진 회사원들의 모습을 정직하게 보여주는 데에 그친다는 한계를 갖는다. 회사원으로서의 삶의 조건을 깊이 성찰하는 과정에서, 회사를 통해 연결된 자신과 사회와의 관계를 재구성하는 탐색에까지 이르지는 못한다. 이러한 ‘회사 인간들’의 서사를 한국형 ‘회사원 소설’, ‘오피스 노블’의 장르 명칭으로 부를 수 있는지는 아직 의문이지만, 2010년대 한국 자본주의의 사회적 초상인 회사원의 세계에 주목하는 특정한 유형의 소설군으로 가늠할 수 있다. This paper analyzes novels by Kim Se-hee and Jang Ryu-jin, which give a realistic description of the working life of a female office worker in her 20s and 30s who lived in the late 2010s. The novels deal with the core themes of youth through work life and survival experiences of working women. In these novels, work is the key life setting of a person, and the characters recognize the contradictory nature of society represented by work and clearly identify their own weaknesses. It is also a common characteristic to express the overall life of a female office worker, such as leisure, love, and marriage. The characters are caught in guilt and resignation within an unjust, inhuman, and unreasonable work system, immersed in denying their own experiences, antagonizing and hating their peers, thoroughly separating and excluding work from life, and earning small pleasures while enjoying cultural tastes. These novels are more like a life record that outlines the superficial daily life and emotions. They do not go so far as to explore their relationship with society by deeply reflecting on the conditions of life as an office worker. Whether the novels can be called genres of Korean-style “office novels” is still questionable, but it can be viewed as a particular type of attention to the world of office workers, a social portrait of capitalism.
