The optical properties of a single crystal grown from a starting composition of Ca_(1.29)Bi_(0.14)VO₄ were measured. The l㎜ -thick crystal plate showed quite a high optical transmittance of 80% above 450 nm, and the absorption edge of the crystal in the UV range was identified at 380 nm. Based on the interference fringe observation it became apparent that the crystal belonged to an optically uniaxial and negative (-) system. The refractive indices of the crystal for the ordinary ray (n_o) and extraordinary ray (n_e) were 1.8747 and 1.8538, respectively, when a Nd:YAG laser (λ=1064 ㎚) was used as the light source. Accordingly the birefringence (Δn) for the crystal was 0.021.en_US
