통사처리과정에서 한국어-영어 이중언어자의 뇌 활성화

Abstract

영어 유창성이 높은 한국어-영어 이중언어 후기 습득자들이 관계절 문장의 문법성 판단검사로 통사처리과제를 수행하는 동안 기능적 자기공명 영상을 측정하였다. 10명의 영어유창성이 높은 참여자들이 두 언어로 제시되는 문법성 판단검사를 수행하였다. 두 언어의 통사처리수행에서 활성화되는 뇌 영역을 통제과제, 응시과제와의 감산으로 산출하고, 두 언어 조건에서의 활성화 강도를 비교하였다. 그 결과, 두 언어의 처리 영역은 전반적으로 비슷하였으나, 한국어(Ll) 문장의 처리에 비해 영어(L2) 문장을 처리할 때 전두엽의 양쪽 반구에서 더 많은 활성화를 보였다. 전두엽의 양쪽 반구에서 더 많은 활성화를 보였다. 한국어 처리의 경우에는 오른쪽 전두엽의 활성화가 보이지 않는 반면, 측두엽의 활성화가 관찰되었다. 이러한 활성화 양상에 관해 이중언어와 통사처리의 특성이라는 면에서 논의하였다.

To examine whether the bilinguals´ two languages are represented in distinct or overlapping areas of the brain, we applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Ten proficient Korean-English (K-E) bilinguals participated in the experiment. We conducted a grammaticality judgment task in which subjects were asked to judge grammaticality of various kinds of relative clause constructions. The results showed that while the locations of activation were similar for both languages, the intensity of activation in these areas were much greater in I.2 English than I.1 Korean. It was also found that there was greater activation in left frontal regions during I.2 English processing than during I.1 Korean processing. As for the right frontal regions, the activation was observed only in I.2 English processing. However, Middle temporal gyrus was found to be activated during I.1 processing, not I.2 processing. We discussed the results as to the bilingualism and syntactic processing.
