Abstract
This study is a small-scale exploratory study to propose KSL standards and assessment for returnee children. We designed a KSL class in which 9 returnee children in the 5th grade were encouraged to engage in participatory activities (i.e., cartoon essays) over one semester. Data from video-taped discussion, field notes, and interviews were analyzed using productive and social frameworks to describe the dynamics of returnees' interactions in the KSL class. The analysis of the data showed that both productive and social frameworks served to interfere, channel, maintain and recover returnees' engagement and that their engagement patterns were ever changing. Based on these findings, we suggested that KSL classes for returnee children should be student-and task-oriented.
