세운상가 장인의 일과 학습에 대한 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 서울시 세운상가 장인들을 대상으로 이들의 일하는 방식과 특성을 살펴보고, 그것이 교육학적으로 어떤 의미를 가지는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 세운상가가 하나의 일터 공동체로서의 개별 장인들에게 미치는 영향과 그것의 일터 학습적 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구 참여자는 서울시 ‘세운 마이스터’로 지정된 열세 명의 장인을 심층 면담하였고, 분석을 위해 질적 사례 연구 방법이 사용되었다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 장인은 일을 통해 배우고 성장했다. 장인은 일을 배우기 위해 공식적으로 스승을 모시기도 했지만, 대체로 경력 초기 점포에서 일하며 동료, 선배, 후배를 통해 어깨너머로 기술을 배우는 비공식적 방법을 통해 기술을 습득했다. 이들은 대체로 생계를 위해 일을 시작하였지만, 꾸준한 자기 성장을 위한 노력, 문제 해결을 위한 탐구의 자세를 바탕으로 점차 장인으로 성장해나갔다. 둘째, 세운상가는 일터 공동체로서 개별 장인들에게 학습의 공간으로 작용했다. 비슷한 분야가 밀집되어있는 상가의 지리적 이점을 활용하여, 장인들은 서로에게 필요한 부품을 수급 받았다. 또한 일상 내에서 교류가 용이하기 때문에 일에 필요한 지식과 기술을 형식에 얽매이지 않고 자연스럽게 공유할 수 있다는 이점이 있었고, 이 과정에서 지식은 확장될 수 있었다. 마지막으로, ‘세운 마이스터’ 사업이라는 사회적 인정 과정은 세운상가 장인들에게 ‘장인’로서의 정체성을 형성하도록 도왔다. 이들은 생계를 위해 묵묵히 자신의 일에 몰두했을 뿐 사회적으로 주목받지 못했다. 그러나 이들의 높은 기술력과 손재주가 객관적으로 평가받음으로써, 자신의 업(業)의 가치를 되새기고 사회를 위해 기여하고자 하는 목표의식을 가지도록 했다. 이 연구는 장인의 일과 학습, 그리고 일터 공동체와 그 속에서 일하는 장인과의 관계에 대해 규명하고 그것이 어떤 교육적 의미를 가지고 있는지를 탐색하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다. This study focused on artisans in Seun Sangga and examined their workplace characteristics with the aim of seeking educational insights. The study further examined how communal Seun Sangga affects individual artisans and their workplace learning. The study conducts in-depth interviews on thirteen “Seun Meisters” designated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and used qualitative case study method for analysis. First, artisans learned skills by working. Although some artisans learned officially under a master, most acquired skills informally by working with coworkers and watching over-the-shoulder. They gradually grew into meisters through endless self-development and persistent problem solving. Second, as a communal workplace Seun Sangga served as a learning space for individuals. Since similar businesses were concentrated, artisans freely exchanged knowledge, skills, and equipment with each other daily. Finally, the “Seun Meister” project helped artisans form their identities as “meisters.” The meister title gave social recognition to artisans that allowed their craftmanship to be valued objectively. This enabled meisters to reflect on the values they create and reinforce their sense of purpose to contribute to the society. This study analyzed the relationships between workplace communities and the meisters and examined its educational values.
