Abstract
The specific rates for the solvolyses of methyl 4-(bromomethyl)benzoate in a wide range of solvents have been measured by using the titrimetric method at 45.1℃. From the obtained kinetic data, the specific rates were applied to the Grunwald-Winstein equation using the values for N_T and Y_Br. In addition to the kinetic study, gas chromatography was used to identify the products as well as to determine their relative percentages. Also, the values of activation enthalpy and activation entropy for the solvolyses of methyl 4-(bromomethyl)benzoate were calculated from the rate constants measured at various temperatures. From those results, it could be estimated that the solvolysis of methyl 4-(bromoinethyl)benzoate proceeded through a bimolecular pathway which prefers a bond formation in all the solvents.
