Abstract
A coupled shear wall system is an efficient seismic force resisting system, which have been widely used in high-rise building construction. Since diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams (DRCBs) in coupled shear walls are capable of dissipating large amount of energy during earthquakes, these beams act as seismic fuse elements. The objective of this study was to explore the cyclic behavior of DRCBs with different amount of diagonal reinforcement. For this purpose, four DRCBs specimens were made and tested with quasi-static cyclic loading. All specimens were designed and detailed according to ACI 318-14. The shear strength and deformation capacity of these DRCB specimens were compared to those obtained from ACI 318-14 and ASCE 41-17, respectively. It is observed that the amount of diagonal reinforcement significantly affected the cyclic behavior of DRCBs. With a decrease in diagonal reinforcement, both shear strength and deformation capacity of a DRCB specimen decreased.
