이동통신 표준특허 동태적 특성 고찰

Abstract

본 연구는 이동통신 표준 특허 총 23,879건을 수집하여 표준기술의 3세대에 걸쳐 시장 측면과 기술 측면의 동태적 특성을 분석한다. 분석 관점음 기업형태, 지리적 특성, 기업 제품형태, 기업의 시장 지위, 출원시기 등을 포함한다. 분석 결과, 이동통신 표준기술이 진화할수록 기업의 표준특허 경쟁은 심화됨을 알 수 있었다. 제조기반기업은 2세대부터 4세대 표준기술 전반에 걸쳐 표준특허 점유율이 가장 높고, 꾸준히 성장하였다. 이에 반해 비제조기반 기업은 점유율은 높지 않았으나, 표준화가 본격화된 90년대 후반부터 점유율 성장이 뚜렷하였다. 또한 지리적으로는 유럽 기업의 표준특허 보유량은 감소하고, 아시아 기업의 표준특허 보유량은 증가함을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 표준특허 분석결과는 이동통신분야 시장의 주요동향과 유사하였으며, 이를 통해 표준특허 분석이 기업의 연구개발 현황과 전략을 분석하는데 적절한 접근방식이 될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. Using 23,879 standard essential patents across three generations of mobile telecommunication technologies, we analyze technology and market characteristics of standard technologies. We collected standard essential patents from the ETSI online IPR database and matched the collected standard patent data with patent information from the European Patent Office patent database to form a set of analysis data. Analytic criteria include the type of firms, geographical features, the type of products, market positions of firms, and application year. Analysis implies strengthening competition for standard essential patents along with the evolution of standard technology. Mobile handsets and equipment manufacturers have the highest share of standard patents across all of its standard technologies, from the second to the fourth generation, and has steadily grown. In contrast, non-practicing entities did not have a high share, but their share growth was evident from the late 1990s when standardization began. Geographically, while the share of European firms decreased, the share of Asian firms has increased. The results of these standard essential patent analyses were similar to the major trends of firms in the mobile telecommunication market, indicating that the standard essential patent analysis can be an appropriate approach for analyzing the status and strategy of the firm's research and development.
