Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the effective English vocabulary learning strategies and to determine which strategies are correlated with their English proficiency using surveys conducted for three different age groups, first year and third year students of middle school and third year students of high school. In order to achieve the goal of this study the following three questions are raised. First, what vocabulary learning strategies do Korean middle and high school English learners use? Second, is there any age difference in the perception and use of vocabulary learning strategies? Third, which strategies can distinguish high, middle and low groups divided by English proficiency? To examine these research questions, data were collected from a total of 352 Korean first year and third year middle school students and third year high school students. A survey questionnaire was administered to the students to find out what kinds of English vocabulary learning strategies they are actually using. Also the standardized scores of English test taken in their school were used to measure the students' English proficiency. The results were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, correlation, ANOVA and LSD. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, in their attempts to consolidate the retention of a newly acquired word, Korean students strongly favored such strategies as 'Practicing words through verbal repetition,' 'Writing words repeatedly,' 'Asking classmates or friends for the meaning of the word,' 'Guessing meaning from the context' among 44 vocabulary learning strategies of Schmitt's classification. On the contrary, the learners rarely used 'Putting a name tag on a physical object to memorize the word,' 'Knowing the meaning of words with group activities,' 'Asking a teacher synonyms of the learnt word or sentences which include the word'. Second, Korean students frequently used cognitive strategies and memory strategies, while they rarely used social strategies. According to age groups, Korean high school students used metacognitive strategies more often than other age groups. However, as the students grow older, they tended to use vocabulary learning strategies less often even though they thought using vocabulary in real world are more important than just memorizing it. Third, the groups divided by English proficiency levels showed the difference in using some specific vocabulary learning strategies. High proficiency level students used wider range of strategies than low proficiency level group. On the other hand, low proficiency level students considered social strategies as an effective means of discovering word meaning and used the strategies more often than high proficiency level students. The present study shows some strategies are very frequently used but generally their use of vocabulary learning strategies are limited. Most of Korean students tend to rely on cognitive and memory strategies and they don't use more complicated strategies. However, using different and complicated strategies for vocabulary learning is very important according to previous studies. Thus it is necessary to provide the students with effective vocabulary learning strategies that are appropriate for classroom activities and to implement various teaching methods to English class after careful consideration of the differences and styles of each students.
