성인 영어 학습자의 듣기 전략 사용과 듣기 능력에 관한 연구

Abstract

Nowadays, the purpose of English learning and teaching is acquiring communicative competence for which the importance of listening comprehension skill is emphasized. As the focus of learning and teaching moves from teachers to learners, strategies become highlighted. This study is to research the listening strategies used Korean adult English learners and their listening comprehension skill. After that, listening strategy training is supposed to be done by the learners. For this research, 160 Korean adult English learners working at their job were selected as subjects first, and they were asked to fill out some questionnaires on listening strategy use. It identifies Korean adult English learners' listening strategy use and listening comprehension. And then, 30 volunteers were chosen as subject for listening strategy training. The main findings of the study are as follows. First, Korean adult English learners reported using listening strategies to a certain degree, and specially compensatory strategies are used most, followed by affective strategies. On the other hand, metacognitive strategies and social strategies are relatively less often used. Second, the more proficient learners used all of the categories of strategies more frequently than the less proficient learners. Both of them used compensatory strategies and affective strategies frequently, but the more proficient group's frequency is higher than the less proficiency group's. Third, listening strategy training improved the learners' listening strategy use and listening ability to a significant level. The less proficient group showed greater improvement than the more proficient group. Learners' attitudes toward the strategy training were mostly positive. Most of strategies were helpful, they thought. New strategies were easy to make the most of and directed them to study for themselves. And strategy use reduced learners' anxiety and helped listening comprehension. More than half the trainees told that listening strategy training were necessary. We can apply the result of this study to develop the English education programs. Maybe that kind of programs will be very helpful to Korean adult English learners. So more studies related to learning strategy need to be continue from now on.; 현재 외국어 교육의 목표는 의사소통 능력의 획득이며, 이를 위해서 기본적인 언어 기능으로서 듣기 이해의 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 또한 교수 · 학습의 중심이 교사에서 학습자로, 학습의 결과에서 과정으로 옮겨가면서 전략에 대한 관심도 높아지고 있다. 본 연구는 정규 교육과정을 마친 후 주로 자가 학습을 통해 영어를 공부하는 성인 학습자들의 듣기 전략 사용과 그 효과에 대해 살펴보고, 전략 훈련이 전략 사용과 듣기 능력에 어떤 영향을 미치는가 알아보기 위해 계획되었다. 이 연구를 위해서 서울, 경기 지역의 직장인 160명을 대상으로 전략 사용 실태를 조사, 분석하고, 그들 중 희망자 30명을 모집하여 전략 훈련을 실시한 뒤 전략 사용과 듣기 능력 면에서 그 변화 양상을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 설문지를 통한 전략 조사, TOEIC 듣기 문제를 이용한 듣기 능력 평가, 그리고 결과 분석에 있어서는 유의미성 확인을 위한 통계 처리를 하였다. 전략 사용 실태 조사와 전략 훈련을 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 직장인 성인 영어 학습자들이 가장 많이 사용하는 전략은 부족한 언어 지식을 극복하기 위한 보상 전략이었으며, 학습에 알맞은 심적 상태를 유지하기 위해 정의적 전략도 비교적 많이 사용하고 있었다. 반면, 학습자들이 적게 사용하여 가르치고 연습할 필요가 있는 전략은 사회적 전략과 상위인지 전략이었다. 사용 빈도가 높은 것부터 나열하면 보상 전략, 정의적 전략, 기억 전략, 인지 전략, 사회적 전략, 상위인지 전략의 순이다. 둘째, 듣기 능력 상위 집단이나 하위 집단 모두 보상 전략과 정의적 전략을 즐겨 사용하지만 전략값은 상위 집단이 더 높게 나타났다. 그리고 상위 집단은 기억 전략과 인지 전략을 보통 이상으로 사용하고 있었지만 하위 집단은 낮은 수준인 3 이하의 값에 머물렀다. 전반적으로 상위 집단은 듣기 전략을 하위 집단보다 많이 사용하고 있었다. 셋째, 듣기 전략 훈련 실시로 전략 사용 빈도가 증가하고 듣기 능력이 향상됨을 알 수 있었다. 특히, 듣기 능력 하위 집단의 경우, 전략 사용 빈도가 크게 증가하고 듣기 능력도 크게 향상되었다. 반면, 상위 집단의 경우는 변화는 있었으나 하위 집단과 비교할 때 미미한 정도의 차이를 보였을 뿐이다. 전략 훈련의 효과는 하위 학습자들에게서 더 확실하게 나타났다고 말할 수 있다. 넷째, 전략 훈련에 대한 학습자의 태도는 대체로 긍정적이었다. 그들은 전반적으로 전략이 듣기 학습에 도움이 되며, 새롭게 배운 전략들은 듣기 학습에 적용하여 활용하기가 쉽고, 학습자가 자가 학습을 할 수 있도록 방향을 제시해 준다고 생각했다. 또 듣기 전략을 사용하면 마음에 부담을 덜어주어서 자신감을 갖게 하므로 영어 듣기 능력 향상에 도움이 된다고 생각하고 있었다. 그리고 전략 훈련에 참가한 학습자의 과반수 이상이 장기적으로 전략 훈련을 할 필요가 있다고 답하였다. 본 연구는 많은 선행 연구들처럼 듣기 능력과 전략의 사용이 관련되어 있음을 밝혔고, 전략 훈련이 전략 사용 빈도를 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라 듣기 능력도 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여 주었다. 이러한 일관된 결과는 성인 대상의 영어 학습 프로그램에 적용될 수 있고, 학습자로 하여금 효율적인 학습을 하게 하여 궁극적으로 영어 교육의 목표인 의사 소통 능력의 획득을 실현에 도움이 될 것이다. 따라서 성인 학습자들을 대상으로 하는 듣기 전략 연구는 좀더 많은 인원과 긴 기간 확보를 통해 계속 진행되어야 하고, 양적 연구뿐만 아니라 좀 더 심도 있는 질적 연구로서 더 많은 후속 연구가 이루어져야 한다.
