Abstract
Formal grammar, which had been the dominant paradigm in the 1960s, distinguishes the knowledge of language from cognitive competence. However, in the early 1970s, Cognitive Grammar appeared as a linguistic model in opposition to formal grammar. Langacker (1987) has significantly developed Cognitive Grammar since that time. In Cognitive Grammar, the linguistic structure is a direct reflex of cognition. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the meanings of the verb bear within the frame of Cognitive Grammar. For this purpose, I will show the images of the verb bear and its extended meanings in spatial and metaphorical domains. The organization of this thesis is as follows: in Chapter 1, I mention the purpose, the organization, and the effect of the thesis. In Chapter 2, I present Kim (2000) and Lee's (1995) previous studies and the weaknesses of those studies. I think that those previous studies will facilitate a better understanding of this thesis. In Chapter 3, I will posit the base meaning from various meanings of the verb bear and show how this base meaning is extended spatially and metaphorically. In Chapter 4, I analyze the meanings of the verb bear in the phrasal verbs, showing how the verb bear and particles are associated through various schemata. In Chapter 5, I compare the verb bear with the verb carry and show the cognitive association of the two verbs. I hope that this thesis will have a positive effect on other studies about English verbs.
