Abstract

Wallace Stevens is a poet of suffering. He is a poet who in his poetry describes beautifully human's pain or suffering even though many of his critics claim that Stevens is an abstract and difficult poet. The purpose of this study is to find the basis for Stevens being a great poet of human suffering. In fact, at his time, Stevens experienced “pressures of reality,” such as the Depression, the ensuing World War, and Ideology, and realized he could not ignore the forms of pain experienced by others. In his poetry, such features of suffering can be considered in two aspects, that is, man and death. The situation of man in suffering brings about a feeling of helplessness and solitude individually and in groups. In particular, in the early poetry appears individual alienation. The alienation comes from the tedious life and enervation of individuals, or the absence of God, or dreary realities, etc. On the other hand, in the later poetry, people belonging to a group or groups appear to be victims of mechanical ideology or terrible war, etc. In the aspect of death, the features of death are described only as "death itself" in the early poetry, but as imaginative death, that is, the state of mental death in the later poetry. Stevens, here, imagines the world beyond death. Stevens tries to face the reality of society, not wanting to feel their pain directly or describe their suffering vividly. In an effort to reduce the suffering of reality or to accept the pressure of reality, Stevens's major strategy is to maintain the distance from the suffering of others' experience. Stevens redefines the suffering in three aspects. First of all, his effort to reduce suffering appears to merge “Experience in Mask.” Experience of individual suffering in his poetry leads to general experience of all humanity. As a result, the depth of individual suffering is reduced. The second is “Reducing of Experience in Fatalism.” Fatalism does not notice the present misery and suffering for the future. The more Stevens moves to the later poetry, the stronger the affirmative movement to accept the reality. In his poetry, the experiences of suffering are reduced in simple words. Lastly, the third aspect that Stevens tries to consider in his poetry is “Irony of Experience in Power of Negation.” Stevens suggests negative expressions or “what is not there,” showing how valuable reality is. As a result, the depth of suffering and pain is more reduced, and the readers, in his poetry, come to recognize their necessary fatalism. Stevens는 자신이 살던 시대에 경제공황이나, 연이은 세계대전, 그리고 이데올로기 같은 현실의 압력을 경험하고, 다른 사람들이 겪은 고통의 형태들을 무시할 수 없다는 것을 깨달았다. 그의 시에 있어 그러한 고통의 모습은 인간과 죽음이라는 두 가지 큰 측면에서 고찰될 수 있다. 그 중 고통에 빠진 인간의 상황은 개인적으로나 집단적으로 무력감과 고독감을 야기한다. 특히, 초기 시에는 개인적인 소외현상이 나타난다. 그러한 소외는 지루한 삶과 개인의 무력감, 신의 부재, 혹은 황량한 현실 등에서 오는 것이다. 반면에 후기 시에서는 집단으로서의 인간들이 기계적인 이데올로기나 무서운 전쟁 등의 희생물로 그려진다. 제 3장은 죽음의 측면을 다룬다. 초기 시는 죽음의 모습을 죽음 그 자체로만 묘사하지만, 후기 시는 상상력의 죽음, 즉 정신적 죽음의 상태를 보여준다. 그의 후기 시는 죽음 너머의 세계를 그리기도 한다. 그는 사회 현실을 직시하고자 인간의 고통을 직접적으로 느끼거나 생생하게 묘사하지는 않는다. 현실의 고통을 감소시키거나 현실의 압력을 수용하려는 노력 속에서, Stevens는 다른 사람들이 경험하는 고통으로부터 거리를 유지한다. 제 4장에서는 현실을 긍정하고 수용하려는 Stevens의 언어를 세 가지측면에서 다시 정의하고자 한다. 먼저 그는 마스크를 통해 경험을 융합시킨다. 그의 시에 나타난 개인적 고통의 경험은 마스크를 통해 인간 모두의 보편적 경험이 되며, 그 결과 고통의 심도가 감소된다. 두 번째 측면은 그의 숙명론을 통한 경험의 축소이다. 숙명론은 미래를 바라보면서 현재의 불행과 고통을 중요시 여기지 않는다. 후기로 갈수록 그의 시는 현실을 수용하려는 긍정적인 움직임을 보이며, 고통의 경험들을 단조로운 용어로 축소하거나 융합시킨다. 세 번째 측면은 그가 부정의 힘을 통해 경험을 반어적으로 보고 있는 것이다. 먼저 그는 부정의 표현이나 존재하지 않는 것을 제시함으로써, 현실이 얼마나 가치 있는가를 보여주고자 한다. 그 결과, 그의 시에서 고통의 깊이는 훨씬 더 감소되고, 독자들은 인간의 필연적인 숙명론을 받아들이고 삶을 보다 긍정적으로 수용하게 된다.
