Open Source Software 성공에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구

Abstract

1990년 대 중반부터 학계나 업계 종사자들 사이에 Open Source Software에 대한 관심이 급증했다. Mozilla web browser, Linux 운영체제, Apache web server 등과 같은 몇몇 성공적인 프로젝트들이 그러한 관심을 부추겼다. 특히 Open Source Software는 경제적 이득이 있다는 측면에서 개발자와 사용자들의 관심을 끌었다. 또한 Open Source Software 프로젝트는 개발자들에게 좋은 배움의 경험과 명성을 높일 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 때문에 신속하고도 활발한 참여를 불러왔다. 최근에는 세계 여러 나라에서 정부차원의 Open Source Software 에 대한 지원과 관심이 높아지고 있다. 그러나 이와 같은 Open Source Software 의 성장과 관심에도 불구하고, 현재까지 Open Source Software에 대한 연구들은 대체로 정성적이거나 탐색적인 것에 머물러 왔다. 따라서 Open Source Software의 성공을 평가하는 실증적 연구는 Open Source Software 프로젝트들에 대한 이해를 높이기에 유용할 것이고 관련 프로젝트들이 좀 더 성공적으로 수행될 수 있도록 도울 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 실증적 연구를 위해 먼저, Open Source Software에 관련된 상황의 특성에 관해 고찰하고, 이전의 정보시스템 성공 모델을 연구, 변형하여 Open Source Software의 성공의 결정요인을 측정할 수 있는 모델을 제안한다.; Since the mid-1990s, there has been a surge in interest among academics and practitioners in open source software (OSS). While the literature on OSS abounds, studies on OSS success remain qualitative or exploratory in nature. Thus, an empirical study that measures the success of OSS would be useful for enhancing our understanding of OSS projects, and how they could be better handled. In this study, we consider the characteristics of the OSS context, and adapt previous Information Systems success models to derive an OSS success model. Using the proposed model, we identify seven determinants of OSS success and a number of significant relationships among the determinants. Our findings show that three factors in particular - software quality, service quality and User Satisfaction - exert significant effects on other determinants - User satisfaction and Use. Contrary to popular belief, individual net benefits have little effects on two other determinants of OSS success: Use and User satisfaction. These findings help advance theory and are of implications for OSS practitioners.
