정지용 산문시 연구

Abstract

본고에서는 정지용의 시세계의 변모 양상 속에 나타나는 산문시들의 형태와 특성, 그 의미 살펴보고자 한다. 정지용은 섬세하고 절제된 언어 구사와 현대적 감수성, 참신한 이미지 제시와 다양한 시 형식 실험 등으로 1930년대 모더니즘 시를 대표하는 시인으로 자리매김 되고 있다. 정지용의 초기시에서 산문시의 특징을 지닌 시들로는『황마차』,『슬픈 기차』 등으로, 감각적이고 정제된 언어들을 사용하여 대상의 이미지를 정확하게 그려내고 있는 가운데 일상 언어와 서사적 전개, 서술적 종결어미 사용을 통해 중기 산문시의 등장을 예표하고 있다. 중기의 시는 『카톨릭청년』을 통해 발표한 종교시들 가운데서 급격한 산문화의 경향을 찾아볼 수 있다. 특히 『카톨릭 청년』지 4호를 통해 발표된『밤』과『람프』는 수필 혹은 산문으로 분류됨에도 불구하고 서구 산문시와 비교하여 볼 때 시적 측면과 산문적 측면에서 완성된 산문시의 특징을 발견할 수 있다. 정지용의 후기 산문시는 형식의 제약을 받아들이면서도 그것을 뛰어넘기 위한 시도라 할 수 있다. 전통적이면서도 참신할 것을 항상 요구했던 그는 동양적 정신세계와 그 형식 속에서 좀 더 자유롭기 위한 시도를 해왔다. 그러한 노력들이 후기에 와서 산문시 형태로 나올 수 있었던 것으로 보여진다. 후기 산문시에 나타난 특성들을 살펴보면, 우선 형태적인 면에서 휴지공간을 두어 시의 흐름을 조절하고 동양적인 여백의 미까지 살려내고 있다. 또한 마침표를 제거해 버려 시각적인 효과까지 거두고 있다. 이러한 노력은 정지용이 동양적인 정신세계를 표현하기 위한 방법이었다. 초기시에서 반복과 대립을 통해 시의 의미 확장을 꾀했다면 후기 산문시에 와서는 반복과 대조, 역설, 아이러니 등의 수법들을 사용하면서 시의 구조 내에서 서로 상관관계를 맺고 있다. 이러한 정지용의 산문시의 여정은 단순히 일회적인 시도에 그친 것이 아니라 초기부터 꾸준히 진행된 시형태에 대한 실험으로 쌓인 결과물임을 알 수 있다. 또한 정지용의 산문시는 전통적인 요소를 살리면서도 새로운 내용을 담을 수 있는 가능성을 보여준 새로운 시도로 볼 수 있다.; "JUNG JI YONG " is occupied a position as a poet who represent modernism poet in the 1930yrs by having a good command of delicated and moderated language and modern sensibility.
