50년대 호러 영화의 신기원을 이룬 해머영화사 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 그간 소외되었던 호러 장르를 되살려 오늘날 호러 영화의 바탕을 이뤄낸 영국 독립 영화 제작사인 해머 영화사의 영화사적 의의를 소개하고자 한다. 이를 통해 20세기 영화사에 있어 최고의 프랜차이즈 상품으로 손꼽히는 호러 영화사의 기원을 찾아보고, 이 장르가 우리와 사회에게 어떤 정서적 영향을 주었는지에 대해 알아보는 것이다. 일반적으로 호러 영화는 가장 천대받는 장르 영화지만 우리가 가장 두려워하는 육체적, 정신적 폭력을 스크린에 그대로 보여주는 장점이 있다. 동시에 가장 감추고 싶은 혐오와 분노 같은 본능적인 감정을 표출하는 인물들을 통해 관객에게 인간의 위선과 감춰진 위악을 대면하게 만든다. 호러의 인물들은 대개 파국적인 결말을 맞는 비극적 주인공들이다. 그렇기 때문에 이들이 영화 속에서 겪는 수난은 우리에게 공포와 두려움, 동정, 연민 등의 감정을 이끌어내며 카타르시스를 느끼게 된다. 이런 순수한 감정의 고양과 정화를 일으키는 현대판 호러 영화의 선조가 바로 해머 영화사의 호러 영화다. 해머 영화사가 등장할 당시 영국은 전후의 경제적 공황과 매카시즘으로 인한 사회적 불안감과 그로 인한 광기가 사람들의 일상을 무겁게 누르고 있었다. 그러나 이전 빅토리아 시대의 형식적인 도덕주의에 매몰되어 있던 영국 사람들은 자신의 두려움을 고상한 외면으로 감추면서도 속으로 곪아 들어가는 공포에 염증마저 느끼고 있었다. 하지만, 해머영화사의 호러가 관객들의 눈과 마음을 사로잡으면서 그들은 숨겨진 공포를 우회적으로나마 표출할 수 있었다. 특히 사회의 어두운 속성을 적나라하게 드러내던 동시대의 키친 싱크 영화에 비해 세련된 형식에 우화적인 교훈을 담아낸 해머 호러는 관객들이 원하는 게 무엇인지, 그리고 구태의연한 스토리를 어떻게 참신하게 재창조하는 지에 대한 모범적인 사례를 다른 영화사에 제시했다. 무엇보다 친숙한 원작의 창조적인 변용 문제에 관해서는 우리에게 가장 필요한 문화 컨텐츠의 원형을 제시했다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 현대는 해머 영화사가 활동하던 당시보다 훨씬 더 다양한 분야로 한창 진행 중이며, 서로 다른 분야의 문화가 자유롭게 융합되는 미디어 믹스가 활발하게 일어나고 있다는 점에서 많은 제작자들은 문화 컨텐츠의 중요성을 역설하고 있는 상황이다. 하지만 하늘 아래 새로운 것이 없다는 말처럼 더 이상 참신하면서도 독창적인 컨텐츠를 찾기란 쉽지 않다. 그런 점에서 해머 영화사의 사례는 오늘날 문화 컨텐츠 산업에 종사하는 사람들이 가져야 할 마음가짐과 열린 생각을 제공해주는 타산지석이 될 것이다.; This paper mainly analyzes Hammer Films that has great authority with horror movies. Hammer Films is believed that it has produced well made horror films and had an influence on the similar genre movies. Needless to say, it cannot be said that every movies produced by Hammer films is a masterpiece. Taking into consideration of its cramped and restricted conditions, it might be said that the movies of Hammer films are worth being explored. This paper shows how the Hammer Films rise and fall and what it achieves in its film history. Also, in this paper the origin of modern horror movies and the emotional effect on modern society are explored. As you know, horror movies show violences on the screen plainly and characters' instinctive behavior in movies make us confront ourselves with secret hypocrisy of our mind.` Hammer's horror movies play an important role in this inherence. Concerning this point, this paper attempts to research how the characters are interrelated with each member in 50s, the English victoria society, by using the methodology of analysis of film text. Especially, 'Dracula' and 'Frankenstein.' are emphasized in this paper. Through this character of Hammer Films expresses the crisis of modern family and the fear of McCarthyism. On the other hand, Frankenstein is the icon of arrogance of humans. His scientific failures are believed to be a perfect example of misuse of a scientific technology. In this study the creative variations of Hammer horror movies about old fable story also have been discussed in terms of psychology in order to find a specific implication of characters in Hammer's series. Also, this paper explores the movies of Hammer Films as an good example of a literary and film combination.
