Abstract
This study utilized the attribution theory to examine the relationship between responsibility attribution and public acceptance and examined corporate reputation and CEO reputation as predictors of public acceptance. The component factors of CEO reputation that affect public acceptance were further studied by examining the cases of Samsung and Hyundai Motor Company. The survey samples were randomly selected from residents of Seoul and GyeongGi-do, ages from 25 to 55 years old. Total of 590 questionnaires were used for analysis and hierarchical regression analysis was performed to examine the public acceptance determinant factors of post-crisis communication. The results of this study are as follows. First, both the cause responsibility attribution and the solution responsibility attribution were significant predictors of public acceptance. These variables had 31.3% predictive power for acceptance of Samsung and 31.9% predictive power in predicting acceptance of Hyundai Motor Company. Second, the variables corporate reputation and CEO reputation which were expected to have effect on public acceptance from previous researches were explored. Among CEO reputation factors, CEO credibility and customer management, strategic vision and the Korean cultural emotion were statistically significant, whereas corporate reputation was not statistically significant. Although corporate reputation was positively correlated with acceptance, the predictive power was not significant. However, results showed that CEO reputation is a significant predictor of acceptance of post-crisis communication, additional explaining about 12 percent of total variance of Samsung case and about 13 percent of Hyundai Motor Company. The current study showed that the significant variables having predictive powers in explaining post-crisis communication acceptance are responsibility attribution and CEO credibility, customer management, strategic vision, and Korean cultural emotion. This implies that public acceptance is higher when public think that the cause of the crisis is attributed to, and the responsibility is given to a party. In addition, public acceptance is higher in situations of high CEO credibility, better customer management and strategic vision, and when there are more positive views of Korea cultural emotion of a CEO. This study provides both theoretical and practical implications. By utilizing attribution theory, this study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how post-crisis communication is systematically analyzed. Also, the results of the current study sought the specific dimensions of CEO reputation that provide practitioners with insights on establishing strategies for positive CEO reputation.
