Abstract

Toni Morrison은 역사 왜곡과 삭제로 소멸된 흑인들의 맥박과 정체성 부재의 해결을 위해 과거 흑인의 역사를 그들의 시각으로 바로 세울 것을 역설한다. 작가는 작품 Beloved에서 이를 위한 작업인 흑인의 삶에 대한 재현을 흑인 여성의 모성이라는 새로운 시각에서 제시한다. 흑인 여성의 모성은 백인들이 만들어 유포한 전형들에 의해 그 본질이 왜곡되거나 아예 없는 것으로 간주되어 핍박받았다. 따라서 흑인 여성들에게 있어 모성은 정체성을 찾기 위한 시도이며, 생존해야 할 의미이다. 모성을 부정했던 비인간적인 노예제 하에서 오히려 모성을 주장하며 딸을 살해한 Sethe의 행위는 흑인이 인감임을 증명하고 지배체제에 맞서는 저항의 행위이다. 작가는 Sethe를 통해 미국 역사가 지니고 있는 이데올로기적인 모순을 폭로하고 흑인 모성이 궁극적으로 백인 지배 담론에 대한 저항과 현실 전복의 힘을 가질 수 있음을 보여준다. 다중적 의미를 지니는 Beloved를 촉매로 한 Sethe의 ‘재기억’은 딸을 살해한 과거의 대면일 뿐만 아니라 정체성 확립을 위한 치유의 과정으로, 그녀는 이를 통해 잃어버린 어머니의 기억을 되찾고 그 사랑을 확인함으로써 억눌려있던 과거의 굴레에서 벗어난다. 또한 Sethe의 치유는 공동체의 어머니이자 그녀에게 모성을 베푸는 Baby Suggs의 대리모 역할과, 모성 이해를 바탕으로 과거와 현재의 갈등을 해소하고 미래를 여는 Denver의 교량 역할로 인해 이루어진다. 이러한 과정들을 거치면서 Sethe는 궁극적으로 공동체 여인들이 결속하여 원형적 소리로 Beloved를 축출하는 공동체와의 화합과 공존을 통해 정체성을 회복한다. Morrison은 흑인 여성의 억압의 문제와 모성, 모계 중심의 관계에 대한 새로운 접근을 통해 흑인 여성의 왜곡된 삶을 복원 시키고, 나아가 현대를 살아가는 흑인들에게 그들 문화와 역사를 전수하는 공동체 의식을 공유함으로써 정체성을 회복하여 인종과 계급 그리고 성의 대립을 넘어서 공존하는 흑인의 미래상을 제시한다.; Toni Morrison consistently concerns herself with reconstructing African American history and re-establishing black identity. Since African American history has deliberately been eliminated by the whites, the writer tries to reveal the actual circumstances of slavery and the mental sufferings of black people, especially black women who are doubly marginalized by sex and class. The black female slaves in Morrison's novels not only suffer from their actual circumstances but also struggle in their metaphorical quest for maternal identity. Beloved is a story about black female slaves' pursuit of motherhood. Morrison sees that their identity cannot be built wholly without defining themselves as a mother. The heroine of the novel, Sethe, even committed infanticide, because she didn't want to leave her daughter being sucked into brutal and inhuman slavery. Only her single-minded pursuit of maternity can distantly explain the destructive nature of her behavior. The female characters' healing their traumas and restoring their subjectivity are fundamentally attributed to their unyielding motherhood. In the end of the novel, not only Sethe but also Denver experiences a spiritual rebirth as a woman, understanding the full meaning of the tragic sufferings by African American female slaves and finally connecting to the lost history of black motherhood. It is through Beloved that this miracle can take place. By throwing light on the hard lives of these black women, Morrison recovers a part of the distorted and unrecorded African American history.
