Abstract
To investigate an energy loss mechanism in an open channel flow that passes structures higher than water surface elevation, the amount of energy losses according to the cross-sectional shape of multi-piers was calculated using FLOW-3D which is a 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics program. The amount of energy losses was calculated based on the Manning's roughness coefficient in this study. The effect of grid resolution on the numerical analysis was investigated. In this study, and grids was very densely constituted especially near walls of structures in order to increase the accuracy of numerical simulations. The amounts of energy losses, caused by wall friction and turbulent eddies, depending on water depth were computed with respect to the cross-sectional shapes such as circular, square and oblong piers, which have the same roughness height as bottom wall does, and their resultant amounts were compared. From the numerical results, it was found that energy losses caused by circular piers were the largest, and energy losses caused by oblong piers were larger than that induced by square piers.
