Abstract
Recently, the emissions of nano-particles from vehicle have received increased attention due to their possible effect on human health. Although diesel engine particulate emissions from new vehicles have decreased due to the application of advanced technologies such as high pressure injection and aftertreatment equipment, particle number has not been controlled. SO, the implications of particle emission from vehicles have been studied in a number of large international studies. The UNECE-GRPE Particulate Measurement Programme(PMP) was co-worked with international nations for on future regulation of nano-particle emissions form light duty vehicles. Its goal is an amendment to existing type approval legislation to stipulate an extensive reduction of particle emissions form vehicles. Up to now, the regulations for automotive particle emissions have been based solely on Particulate matter(PM) mass. But new particle number regulation will be added for complement the existing gravimetric method in the future. In this study, the characteristics of nano-particle size distribution and number concentration exhausted from vehicles were examined under various operating condition, fuel type, DPF regeneration and Biodiesel using EEPS(Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer) and CPC(Condensation Particle Counter) system recommended by PMP. Nano-particles exhausted from diesel vehicle with DPF were emitted mainly in the earlier cold start stage. This lead to the conclusion that warming of the engine and operating temperature of DPF has a significant effect on particle emission. For gasoline and LPG vehicle, nano-particle were emitted in the in the earlier cold start stage too because of rich A/F ratio. DPF regeneration is considerably effected on particle emission. During regeneration, particle emissions were emitted 6.2× 1012N/km, 400 times compared with the emission before regeneration. particle with size of 22~100nm was emitted mainly, showing peak value of 40nm in size. This means that regeneration was decreased the mean size of particles. Total PM mass and particle number were reduced according to increasing blended ratio of biodiesel with diesel fuel. but total PM mass was reduced more than particle number because volatile particles were measured in total PM but were not measured in particle number emissions. Nano-particles exhausted from Heavy-duty engine were increased according to increasing engine load and rpm. Especially particles with size over than 30nm were increased.
