ABSTRACT

A Study on Adult EFL Learners' Affective Characteristics - Focused on Attitude, Motivation and Anxiety -

The purpose of this study is to examine adult EFL learners' affective characteristics focused on motivation, attitude and anxiety in learning English. Based on the result, it will also investigate factors that lower learners' desire to study English and suggest effective way for adult EFL learners in the company. The affective characteristics of learners in the process of learning foreign language are very important factors. Especially learner's attitude and motivation are essential factors that lead foreign language acquisition to success. And anxiety has been pointed out as a variable factor which disturbs foreign language learning. Learner's affective factors are changeable according to one's education background and environment. Therefore necessity for the research about this area is to be emphasized. Thus, this study raised the following research questions to investigate affective characteristics of adult EFL learners in the company concentrating on motivation, attitude and anxiety.

First, How are adult EFL learners' attitude, motivation and degree of anxiety?

Second, What are the problems of adult EFL learners based on affective characteristics in learning English?

Third, What are possible solutions for adult EFL learners based on affective characteristics to enhance their desire to study English?

To verify these research questions, a survey was conducted to find out adult learners' attitude, motivation and degree of anxiety in learning English with subject of 100 adult learners who are taking English class or who took English class in the past at about 10 companies around Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Based on the survey, the following conclusions were acquired.

First, adult EFL learners in the company showed a quite positive attitude towards English learning, America&American and English class. However, there were not many students who actually spend extra time in learning English even though they were aware of the importance of learning English. And other problems were that beginners did not participate in class actively where other students' level were higher.

Second, adult English learners had stronger instrumental motivation rather than integrative motivation and stronger extrinsic motivation than intrinsic motivation. Overall extrinsic and instrumental motivation were higher than intrinsic and integrative motivation for adult EFL learners.

Third, adult EFL learners had quite high levels of anxiety both for communication and evaluation. Anxiety for speaking in front of others, anxiety for receiving negative evaluation about one's ability to speak English or examination were one of factors that discourage students in learning English.

Therefore, it is important that teachers consider about learner's affective characteristics when they teach students and develop various teaching methods that can induce learner's motivation. And teachers should also make the classroom atmosphere as comfortable as possible for students with a proper level of anxiety.; 국 문 초 록

본 연구는 기업체에서 이루어지고 있는 사내 수업을 통하여 영어를 학습하는 기업체의 직장인들이 어떠한 학습 태도와 동기를 가지고 영어를 학습하고 있는가, 또한 영어 학습에 대한 불안 정도는 어떠한가를 살펴봄으로써 이와 같은 정의적 측면에서 직장인 학습자들의 영어 학습 의욕을 저하시키는 요인을 밝혀내고 그 결과를 토대로 학습 효과를 증진시키는 바람직한 영어 학습 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 그리하여 이를 알아보고자 다음과 같은 연구문제를 제기하였다.

첫째, 직장인 학습자의 영어 학습 태도, 동기, 불안 정도는 어떠한가? 둘째, 직장인 학습자가 영어 학습을 하는 데 정의적 측면에서 발견된 문제점은 무엇인가? 셋째, 정의적 측면에 근거하여 직장인 학습자의 영어 학습 의욕을 증진시키는 해결 방안은 무엇인가?

이러한 연구문제를 검증하기 위해서 현재 사내에서 영어 수업이 진행되고 있거나 과거에 수업이 이루어졌던 서울, 경기 지역 10군데 기업체의 직장인 학습자 100명을 대상으로 영어 수업에 대한 학습 태도와 동기, 불안 정도에 관한 설문 조사를 실시하고 영어 학습을 하는 데 있어서의 문제점을 찾아보았다. 설문 분석 방법으로는 빈도수와 백분율(%)을 사용하였으며 연구 주요 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, 영어 학습, 미국 & 미국인, 영어 수업에 대한 직장인 학습자들의 태도는 전반적으로 긍정적이었으나 영어 학습의 중요성을 자각하고 있는 데에 비해 실제로 영어 수업 시간 이외의 시간에 영어 공부를 하는 직장인들은 많지 않았고, 수준별로 분반이 이루어지지 않는 기업체의 초급 학습자들의 학습 의욕 저하 및 소극적 학습 태도가 문제점으로 지적되었다. 둘째, 우리나라 직장인들이 영어 학습을 하는 데 있어 통합적 동기보다는 현 업무와 직접 관련되어 학습하는 도구적인 동기가 더 강했고, 스스로가 학습하고자하는 내적 동기보다는 보상이 따르는 외적인 동기가 더 높게 나타났다. 즉, 영어를 공부하는 데 외적, 도구적 동기가 내적, 통합적 동기보다 더 강하게 작용했다. 셋째, 우리나라 직장인 학습자들의 영어 학습에 대한 불안 정도는 의사소통에 대한 불안감과 평가에 대한 불안감 모두 상당히 높은 결과를 나타냈다. 다른 사람 앞에서 영어로 말하는 것에 대한 불안감과 교사나 동료로부터 자신의 영어구사능력에 대하여 부정적인 평가를 받게 될 두려움, 시험에 대한 영어 실력 평가의 불안함 등이 영어 학습에 대한 의욕을 저하시키고 있었다.

위와 같이 우리나라 직장인 학습자들의 영어 학습에 대한 태도와 동기, 불안에 대하여 조사하고 각각의 요인에 근거하여 영어 공부를 할 때 학습 의욕이 저하되는 이유를 알아보았는데, 교사는 이와 같은 정의적인 요인이 학습 성취에 미치는 중요성을 인식하여 학습자들을 지도해야 하고, 학습자들의 동기유발을 일으킬 수 있는 학습자 중심의 다양한 교수법을 연구하여 실제 교육 현장에 적용시킴으로써 학습자가 영어 수업에 대한 불안감을 최소화 하고 스스로 영어 학습에 자신감을 가질 수 있도록 학습 분위기를 조성해야 한다. 본 연구를 토대로 이러한 정의적인 특성들이 학습 성취도나 영어 의사소통 능력과는 어떠한 관계가 있으며 직장인들을 대상으로 조사한 본 연구가 현재 영어를 학습하고 있는 중, 고등학생들에게는 어떻게 적용되어 질 수 있는가에 대한 후속 연구들이 필요할 것이다.
