Abstract
In this study, quantitative determination of nine different toxic gases in fire smoke has been investigated using FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy. Calibration curves were initially built using individual standard gases of asphyxiant gases (CO, CO2 and HCN), ritant gases (HCl, HBr and HF), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) and SO2. IR spectra were collected for gases released from combustion of the interior materials of railway vehicles. Since water spectral features were dominant and overlapping with those of some gases, the water spectral features was initially subtracted and the resulting subtracted spectra were used to develop quantitative calibration curves for all gases. The quantitative analysis results using IR spectroscopy were in good agreement with those from other analytical methods; NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) analyzer for CO and CO2, chemiluminescence NO/NOx analyzer and laser gas analyzer for HCN, HCl and HF. Additionally, the determined concentrations of each gas using IR spectroscopy were converted into toxicity index to correlate with the result from the animal exposure test. As toxicity index calculated using IR data was increased, the implication time of mouse shorten. The toxicity index generated using IR data were accordant to the animal test. In overall, the use of IR spectroscopy enabled to simultaneously determine the concentrations of toxic gases without adopting several different analytical methods.
