Abstract

Seoul is a city with a long history of more than six hundred years, since its founding, a time-span, which embraces a number of historically-and socio-economically important developments. All these developments found their bulit form and contextual representation throughout the city‘s urban system of structure.

Architectural- and Urban Planning today though has been highly dependent on those types of development processes, which put particular types of building-products into its preferred focus of investement strategy, eg. a building type, which is designed for a logic of montaged elements and mass-production, and which in its elementary logic is not even able to contextualize with existing layers of neighbouring buildings or public spaces.

An economic incorporate profits lies at the center of such developments (eg. New Town, Office Parks etc), which have erased numerous urban neighbourhoods of unique cohesive narrative and commnual context. Along with it the layers of original principles of ordering structure, as well as memory and identity have been likely to be erased and forgotten.

This paper will investgate in which way the described process can be referred to as an overall phenomenon, which has its roots also in a dilemma of the architectural- and engineering discourse and practice. A practice, which has devoided itself from applying those compositional methods, which value contextual thinking as a beneficial source of professional dialogue, for both, the building-project and the neighbouring situation.

The title to this phenomenon “Absence of Contextual Compositioning“ refers to my effort to provide a critical study of development scenarios, which positively engage contextual methods for projected ideas of urban-architectural compositioning.
