Abstract
Hydrogels are greatly interesting due to their promising applications in diverse fields such as sensors, adsorbents, and drug delivery system in pharmacy. A novel hydrogel with pure network structure has been synthesized in this thesis. Different hydrogels were synthesized by varying the conditions such as monomer and size of silica particles. The hydrogels were directly prepared by polymerization on peroxide surface generated, which was generated by irradiating 60Co gamma-ray on the surface of silica particle. The peroxidized nano-particles functioned as both an initiator and a cross-linker in a mixture of peroxideized nano-particles and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and styrene. Based on the examination using Raman, ATR-IR and solid 13C NMR, the hydrogel had gel-like bonding structures, and their structures were sensitive to temperature variation. The degree of swelling was greater in basic conditions based on the observation of ink color that was incorporated in the hydrogel. The structure of hydrogel can be easily manipulated by simply optimizing the temperature as well as types of monomers.
