웹툰에서 영화로의 장르전환 연구

Abstract

문화콘텐츠산업은 하나의 콘텐츠로 고수익을 얻을 수 있는 산업인 반면 실패확률도 큰 3H산업(High cost, High risk, High return)이다. 이 같은 산업은 그 특성상 부가가치를 극대화하기 위해 대중성이 이미 확보된 원천콘텐츠를 선호하는 것은 지극히 당위적이다. 대중성이 이미 확보된 콘텐츠가 많은 자본이 투입되는 새로운 콘텐츠를 찾는 것보다 위험 부담을 줄여 줄 수 있는 확률이 크기 때문이다. 또한 기술 발전으로 새로운 매체에 따른 여러 형태의 장르들이 생기면서 경쟁력 있는 원천콘텐츠의 중요성이 날로 높아지고 있다. 최근 몇 년간 원천콘텐츠로 활발히 활용되고 있는 장르로 웹툰(webtoon)을 들 수 있다. 웹툰은 웹을 기반으로 하여 생겨난 만화의 새로운 형태로 1)종 스크롤을 활용하여 탄력적인 서사의 속도 조절이 가능하다는 점, 2) 칸 윤곽선 생략을 통한 감정 이입 강화, 3) 색의 적극적 활용을 통한 표현력 강화, 4) 인터랙션(Interaction)을 활용한 텍스트 확장이 가능하다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 본고는 웹툰의 이와 같은 변별적 특성을 토대로 웹툰에서 영화로 장르 전환(adaptation)한 작품 중 성공한 유일한 사례인 <이끼>를 중심으로 그 장르 전환 전략을 탐구하기 위한 것이다. 웹툰 <이끼>의 스토리텔링(storytelling) 분석을 기반으로 영화로의 장르 전환 전략을 살펴본 결과 1) 향유시간 변화에 따른 서사의 변주, 2) 음악의 적극적 활용을 통한 긴장감 조성, 3) 웹툰 장면 연출에 기반 한 서스펜스 강화와 같은 전략을 구사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 웹툰 <이끼> 스토리텔링의 핵심인 스릴러 장르의 긴장감과 공포감이 영화로 장르 전환되면서 영화에 가장 적합한 전략을 사용하여 구현되고 있는 것이다. 영화 <이끼>의 성공 이후 많은 웹툰 작품들이 여러 장르로의 전환을 시도하고 있고, 현재 진행 중이다. 앞으로 다양한 장르에서의 웹툰 장르 전환에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되기 위해서는 각각의 장르의 스토리(story) 분석도 중요하지만 텔링(telling)에 대한 분석이 더욱 적극적으로 이루어져야 한다는 것을 지적하며 웹툰의 장르 전환 연구가 폭넓게 진행되길 기대해 본다.

A Study On Genre Adaptation from Webtoon to Film -Focus on <Ikki>-

Although the cultural contents industry may create huge profits with only a single content, it is also known as a 3H industry (High cost, High risk, High return) with high probabilities of failure. In seeking for the maximization of its added values, it is very natural that such an industry prefers adopting a source content in which have already secured popularity. Rather than developing new contents which requires a great deal of capital investment, the contents in which has already gained popularity are more likely to reduce the risks and the possibilities of failure. In addition, the advancement of technology and its new mediums today are giving birth to various forms of new genres, in which is significantly increasing the importance of competitive source content. For a genre that had been actively utilized as a source content over the past few years, Webtoon ought to be taken into consideration. Webtoon is a new type of cartoon based on the internet web in which can 1) flexibly control its pace of narration by using vertical scrolling, 2) strengthen empathy by omitting contours, 3) strengthen its expression by utilizing the colors actively, 4)extend its texts by utilizing interactions. Based on the distinctive features of Webtoon presented above, the objective of this paper is to research on the genre adaptation strategy of the one and only successful case of a Webtoon that had been genre adapted to a movie, <Ikki>. After reviewing <Ikki>'s genre adaptation strategy base on webtoon <Ikki>'s storytelling strategy, it was found that <Ikki> was using such tactics as 1) alternating enjoyment time in order to play a variation of the narration, 2) actively employing music to create tensions, 3) strengthening its suspense by creating the movie scenes based on the original Webtoon's scenes. Webtoon <Ikki>'s storytelling's essentials are the thriller genre's tension and the sensation of fear. Successfully adapting these essential elements to the movie, <Ikki> came up with the most suitable strategy for its genre adaptation to a movie. After the success of the movie <Ikki>, numerous Webtoons are attempting to adapt to various kinds genres. In order to expect further vibrant studies on various genre adaptation of Webtoons, analyses of 'telling' should be actively accomplished rather than those of the 'story'. Furthermore, I hope that researches on genre adaptations of Webtoons to be undertaken more broadly and frequently in the near future.
