Abstract
Background : Early neonatal period is critical in successful breastfeeding and establishment of appropriate breastfeeding technique. There is a newly developed custom that mothers who delivered babies stay in postpartum care centers instead of their home for two or three weeks after child birth in Korea recently. The policies of breastfeeding in those facilities can affect the success of mothers’ breastfeeding practice. Purpose : We studied the practice of mothers who stayed in postpartum care centers and the policies of breastfeeding in those facilities, and looked forward to finding the way to help mothers succeed in breastfeeding. Material and Method : We conducted a survey using questionnaires on mothers who visited the departments of Pediatrics in Cheil General Hospital, Kwandong Medical University in Seoul, Yeungnam University Hospital in Daugu, Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung University in Daegu,, and Chonnam University Hospital in Kwangju, from February 2010 to July 2010. We also conducted another survey using questionnaires on the postpartum care centers in Korea. We collected 349 questionnaires from mothers and 151 questionnaires from postpartum care centers. We analyzed the data for the policies and present practice of breastfeeding in postpartum care centers. Results : 340 mothers (97.4%) replied that they had been encouraged breastfeeding in postpartum care centers. 210 mothers (60.3%) practiced rooming-in care, but only 32 mothers (15.2%) performed rooming-in care for 24 hours, and 75 patients (35.7%) for more than 12 hours. Decision for rooming-in care was determined by the mothers in 71.1%, others by postpartum care centers. Bottle feeding was the main method (92.6%) of formula feeding instead of cup or spoon feeding in mixed feeding group. The information about breastfeeding was provided through lecture mostly by nurses (40.1%) and doctors (19.8%), but in some centers lectures given by nonmedical personnels (20.9%). Educational materials about breast feeding were provided only in 55.7%. Conclusion : Providing the appropriate information about breast feeding and helping the new mothers achieve the exclusive breastfeeding are important for postpartum care of mothers in the postpartum care centers. It is necessary for the medical personnels and managers of the postpartum care centers to be educated for breastfeeding.
