Abstract
Porous carbon materials have received a great deal of attention due to their many applications such as adsorption, catalysis and gas separation. In the field of gas separation, the carbon membranes including carbon molecular sieve and porous carbon membranes have been extensively studied during the last 25 years. Nowadays, many researchers have developed different polymeric materials to prepare carbon membrane using the pyrolysis of thermosetting polymers. However, pyrolytic carbon membranes have critical drawbacks in the practical viewpoint of membrane fabrication. Once high temperature necessary for carbonization demands high energy-consumption, and it is difficult to make defect-free membrane during preparation. For preparing thin carbon membranes, porous inorganic supports should be needed but at elevated temperature unavoidable crack formation occurs due to different thermal expansion coefficients between carbons and support layers. Here we demonstrates that the new type of defect-free ultrathin carbon membrane materials using stacks of a 2 dimensional graphene derivatives with internal slit pore. We placed ultrathin carbon layers on any porous substrates even including polymers. Owing to high dispersionity of graphene derivatives in solution, the asymmetry membranes can be prepared in solution phases. That is, the heat treatment process at an elevated temperature is now unnecessary for preparing carbon membranes. All these membranes show high gas permeation properties as well as high gas selectivity (e.g. H2/CO2) due to highly enhanced the carbon dioxide sorption ability. We will discuss these new carbon materials in terms of gas transport behavior in membrane structure.
