성역할 규범의 수용과 거부에 대한 연구

이 연구는 기존의 가부장적 성역할 규범이 현재 한국 사회에서 어떠한 방식으로 나타나고 있는가에 대한 물음에서 출발한다. 특히 기존의 남성 중심적 문화가 여성과 남성에게 어떻게 행동을 하기를 기대하는가에 주목하며, 여성과 남성은 성역할 규범을 어떻게 받아들이는지를 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 나이트 클럽을 자주 이용하는 이삼십대 남녀를 심층면접 하였고, 나이트 클럽과 나이트 클럽관련 인터넷 커뮤니티를 참여관찰 하였다. 나이트 클럽 문화 안에서 나타나는 관계나 행위, 그들이 사용하는 언어를 분석하면서, 나이트 클럽 문화 안에서 나타나는 기존의 남성중심 성역할 규범을 수용하고 거부하는지, 이렇게 행동하는 요인은 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 나이트 클럽 문화에서 성역할 규범이 가장 뚜렷하게 나타나는 부분은 나이트 클럽에 가기 위해 준비하는 것, 나이트 클럽 안에서의 부킹문화, 인터넷 커뮤니티에서의 경험을 공유하는 것이다. 준비단계에서부터 드러나는 ‘여성=외모, 남성=돈’의 이중규범은 나이트 클럽 안에서 남성에게는 돈을 지불하고 여성을 고르는 주체적이고 능동적인 역할을, 여성은 돈을 적게 지불하고(혹은 거의 지불하지 않고) 남성의 선택을 기다리는 수동적인 역할을 부여한다. 나이트 클럽 안에서 남성의 지위는 룸의 크기, 술의 종류, 팁의 양 등 대부분이 돈과 관련 있으며, 여성의 지위는 외모(구체적으로 예쁜 얼굴, 섹시한 몸매 등)와 관련이 있다. 나이트 클럽 문화 안에서 남성의 성적 욕구는 ‘남성성’으로 인식되어 자랑 거리가 되지만, 여성은 여전히 수동적이며, 자신의 성적 욕구를 드러내는 것은 금기시 된다. 이는 인터넷 커뮤니티에서도 그대로 드러나는데, 남성들은 실전기를 통해 여성을 대상화 하고 자연스럽게 자신의 성적 욕구를 표현한다. 하지만 여성이 자신의 성적 욕구를 드러내는 것은 ‘문란한 여성’으로 낙인 되어, 불특정 다수의 남성들에게 성적인 농담이나 성관계 요구를 받기도 한다. 둘째, 성역할 규범에 대한 태도는 성적 측면과 경제적 측면을 기준으로 ‘전체적 수용’, ‘부분적 수용’, ‘부분적 거부’, ‘전체적 거부’로 나눌 수 있다. 전체적 수용은 경제적으로는 남성이 모든 비용을 지불 하는 것을 당연하게 생각한다. 성적으로 순종적이고 종속적인 것을 ‘여성성’으로, 적극적이고 독립적인 것을 ‘남성성’으로 규정하고 이를 받아들인다. 부분적 수용은 성별에 상관없이 경제적으로 독립적이어야 한다는 생각을 가지고 있지만, 성적으로는 여전히 여성이 수동적인 위치에 놓여있어야 한다고 생각하는 유형이다. 부분적 거부는 경제적으로는 남성에 의존적인 모습을 보이지만, 기존의 남성 중심 문화를 거부하며 여성이 주체적으로 행동하는 것에 대해 긍정적인 모습을 보인다. 적극적 거부는 성별에 상관없이 경제적으로 독립적이어야 하고, 자신의 성적 취향을 스스로 선택하고 결정해야 한다고 생각하는 유형이다. 셋째, 기존의 남성중심 성역할 규범을 수용하게 하는 요인은 여성의 손을 잡고 남성의 테이블로 가는 것이 일반적인 ‘부킹문화’와 여성에게만 주는 혜택임을 가장하여 여성이 부킹 상대에 대해 선택할 권리를 빼앗는 ‘푸시’등의 나이트 클럽 문화를 들 수 있다. 남성중심 성역할 규범을 거부하는 요인은 여성이 자신의 성적 욕구를 드러내거나, 주변인의 이야기를 통한 변화, 그리고 여성의 경제적 지위의 향상 등이 있다.

나이트 클럽은 가부장적 지배질서(특히 섹슈얼리티적 요소)에 대한 저항과 지배질서의 재생산이라는 이중성을 가지고 있다. 남성들은 여성을 쾌락의 대상으로만 인식하고 부킹과 성관계를 경쟁의 결과물로 바라보게 함으로써 남성우월주의를 강화시킨다. 여성들은 순결이데올로기의 해체와 가부장적 사회규범에 저항하는 모습을 보이기도 하지만 외모 가꾸기나 경제적 의존 등을 통해 남성 중심의 질서를 강화시키는 기능을 담당하기도 한다. 최근 들어 여성의 성적 주체성 확립에 대한 요구의 증가 및 성 규범의 약화, 여성의 경제적 자립 증가로 인해 여성의 섹슈얼리티는 변하고 있다. 이러한 변화는 성역할 규범의 변화에도 긍정적인 효과를 기대할 수 있다. 본 연구는 나이트 클럽 문화에서 나타나는 성역할 규범과 그 문화를 경험하는 사람들의 태도를 보여주면서 성역할 규범을 유지하고 강화하는 요인과 거부하고 해체하는 요인을 살펴보았다는데서 의의가 있다. 이는 기존의 남성중심 성역할 규범을 해체 할 수 있는 가능성으로 작용할 것이다.|ABSTRACT

The Study on Acceptance and Rejection of Sexual Norms -Focused on the Nightclubs of Men and Women in Their Twenties and Thirties

This study starts from the questioning of in what form the historically hardened standard of sexual role based on patriarch is being represented in the current Korean society. Especially, this study focuses on how the cultures based on historical Korean patriarch expectwomen to react to men, and it tries to approach on how women and men react to such standard of sexual role.

To take an approach for the purpose, this study took a thorough interview with men and women in their twenties and thirties who frequently visit nightclubs and observed the nightclubs and Internet communities related to them. By investigating various relationships, behaviors, and the languages people use in the culture of nightclubs, the study took a close look at whether people accept or not the original standard of sexual role based on patriarch in the culture of nightclubs, and identified the behavioral factors behind such result of the study.

Firstly, the most peculiar parts that show the standard of sexual role in nightclubs are the things to prepare to go to nightclubs, the meetings on the spot, and sharing the experience of internet communities. The dual standard seen from the beginning steps of relating women with visual appearance, men with wealth in nightclubs make men committed to the active role of paying, and make women committed to the passive role of paying less or even none. The status of men in nightclub relates to the size of room, sort of alcohol, the amount of tips etc, and that of women relates to the visual appearance (pretty face, slender and sexy figure in detail). In the culture of nightclub, the sexual desire of men becomes a thing to brag about as it is recognized as manhood, but as women are still more passive; their representation of sexual desire is a social taboo. This attitude toward both sexes is also seen in internet communities. Men use women as a sexual objectification. However, women are forced to have the stigma of being a person who leads a disorderly life, become the subject of sexual jokes, and are demanded to be part of sexual relations from uncertain groups of men.

Secondly, based on sexual and economic aspects, the attitude toward the standard of sexual role can be divided into 'overall acceptance', 'partial acceptance', 'partial rejection', and 'overall rejection'. While in overall acceptance, in economic term, it is thought to be natural for men to take the bill. It also authorizes sexually passive and subordinate attitude as womanhood, and active and independent attitude as manhood. Irrelevant of sex, partial acceptance retains the need of economic independence; however, sexually it still locates women in the passive societal status. Though partial rejection shows the economic dependence on men, it rejects the historically maintained patriarchal culture while in the meantime, reacts positively toward women being active members of the society. Irrelevant of sex, overall rejection maintains the idea of economic independence, and assures people to choose autonomously the attitude of their preference.

Thirdly, the factors that make people to accept the original standard of patriarchal sexual role could be a unilateral meeting culture of men grasping the hand of women and, disguised as a privilege of women, depriving of women the right to choose the men they want to meet, which is so called 'push', one of the nightclub culture. The factors behind being against the standard of patriarchal sex role are women's representative of sex desire, changes by the surroundings, and enhancement of women's economic status.

Nightclubs possess duality of denial on patriarchal dominance (especially sexually) and reproduction and maintenance of such system. Men strengthen their dominance of the patriarch by treating women because of their sexual objectification and competition among other men. Women express their rejection with the destruction of virginity ideology and resistance against the patriarchal social standard; however, they simultaneously fortify such dominance of men by taking care of the outer appearance and depending economically on men. Recently, women's sexuality has changed by the increasing demand of establishment of women's sex identity and weakening of sex standard and enhancement of economic ability. Such change makes people expect a positive effect on the standard of sex role.

This study possesses social significance as it took a close look at what the factors maintain and fortify, resist or reject the standard of sex role by showing the attitude of a person who has experienced the standard of sex role and culture. The result of the study will work as a possibility of destructing the patriarchal standard of sex role.; ABSTRACT
