- Abstract
- We introduce a novel method for synthesis of titania nanoparticles chemically grafted with zwitterionic poly (2-methacryroyl oxyethyl phosphoryl choline) brushes and gels. The essence of our synthetic approach is to chemically tag double-bonds onto titania nanoparticles and then to control polymerization loci during the initiation stage. It leads to favorable nucleation and growth of growing polymer chains on the surface of titania particles. Use of this synthesis protocol allows us to obtain hybrid inorganic nanoparticles with a thin polymer layer of which thickness ranges even in a few nanometers. In this study, we have tried to demonstrate that surface chemistry of our hybrid nanoparticles is certainly important and plays a key role in regulating particle-to-particle interactions in suspension, thus providing a useful means to improve suspension stability of inorganic nanoparticles in complex formulations.
