Abstract
ABSTRACT Evaluating Smartphone applications for Learning English Speaking and Surveying Users' Perception Nho, Jae Jun Dept. of English Education The Graduate School of Education Hanyang Universitiy This study presents evaluating whether smart phone application materials for English speaking are efficient or not by surveying satisfaction of users. 25 participants in this study were adults between 20s and 30s with different occupational clusters and they routinely gathered for free-talking club every weekend. The study went on for 9 weeks throughout 1st period and 2nd period. The participants downloaded 2 applications dealing with English speaking and had time to free-talk about what they learned during each week. Research questions were settled as follows to examine whether the applications are efficient as teaching materials and induce participants’ satisfaction or not: 1. Do the designated English speaking applications (Grammar World To Speak, Chatting An Hour In English) provide efficient learning, satisfying the standards to improve English speaking? 2. Between the two applications, which one affects more positively learners’ satisfaction and why? In order to get the answer of these questions, quantitative and qualitative research were taken. The standard of smart learning, electronic and material for efficient English speaking, and that of psychological validity in relation to the learners’ pedagogical requirements as well as process and content validity regarding the thinking underlying writer’s presentation of the content in the material and approach to teaching and learning respectively were used to make survey form. In addition, interviewing was implemented to get more specific answer from participants. The result of analyzing came out in the following manner. First, two selected application materials for English speaking have positive influence on participants in enhancing their speaking competence, and the result of survey shows that satisfaction of participants was above the average. But, The needs of more learning activity and environment for audio-visual education were presented. Second, The Grammar World To Speak got higher preference and satisfaction in the survey. The degree of satisfaction of it was 64%, which is higher than 36% degree of the other one. Also, The participants answered they got higher satisfaction in the learners needs, independence and autonomy, cooperation, content, authenticity, appropriacy, accessibility, and flexibility aspect except Graphics/layout and creativity. The reasons of higher satisfaction and preference were that the Grammar World To Speak was more interesting , that the motivation to learn increased, that it helps participants’ speaking competence, and that participants gained self-confidence while learning with it. Those aspect seemed to be occurred from a lot of learning activities which consist of quiz games. With these finding, it is clearly shown that the smart phone application learning material affects learning of English speaking positively and efficiently, and the reason that the level of learners’ satisfaction on the material is high is from lots of entertaining learning activities.
