- In this paper, a design method of the concentrated winding interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for saliency-based sensorless control at a low speed including standstill were investigated. For the proposal of the design criterion for sensorless-oriented motors, the cause of the occurrence of the periodic estimated rotor position error was determined using a mathematical approach. The results were verified through both MATLAB simulations and experiments. In addition, it was proved that the configuration of the stator tooth tip is a major factor which has an impact on the sensorless controllability of the concentrated winding motors as a result of finite element analysis (FEA).
Based on the criterion and the analysis, two models were proposed in the paper. A prototype was designed firstly, and the sensorless drive feasibility and the validity of the simulation results were verified via experiments. Finally, through the optimization combined with the geometry design parameters in the rotor and stator, an improved model with excellent sensorless controllability and electrical characteristics was arrived at and proposed.
