Abstract
| Recently, the academic circle and the press actively criticize neoliberalism, but the global and regional influence of neoliberalism is still valid. This study examined the golden age of self-development, healing, and mentor in the popular culture with the popularity of neoliberalism not as a temporary wave, but a subject of critical analysis. It particularly concentrated on the fact that a series of phenomena only concerns a certain generation. The‘mentor fever’ is worth analyzing as a cultural phenomenon that can explore the emergence of a certain group that can be called a certain generation, the formation of subjects, and the issue of powers around the discourse. This study begins by addressing what the discourse of generation is in the Korean society today, what its politicaleconomic and sociocultural intentions are, and what its ideological values and realistic effects are. The purpose of this study is to suggest how we should take a critical approach to the discourse of generation and the mentor fever in relation to the intensification of neoliberalism. For this, firstly this study theoretically examined the governmentality of neoliberalism based on Michel Foucault's theory of discourse and concept of governmentality. For the analysis, it analyzed the texts from the books and newspaper articles and the discussions on generation and the discourses on mentoring through various media. Also, it examined how the young generation actually accepts mentoring through in-depth interviews. As a result, it was found that the discourse of generation and the mentor fever could be understood as a discoursive formation with complex interests and powers entangled between the producers and receivers of discourse. The mentoring led by mentors was not any different from the emphasis of self-development within the order of neoliberalism, and may dangerously convert the sociostructural issues of the young generation into personal issues. The discourse produced by the young generation was not free from the influence of cultural industry and neoliberalism and did not have the autonomy as a discoursive formation. Another limitation was that the discourse of young generation overlooked the gender issue and hierarchical issue within the generation. The significance of this study was that it attempted to discuss the discourse of generation from the formation of subjectivity within neoliberalism and explore the sociocultural implication between the structure and the individual. The discussion of subjectivity within the context of neoliberalism could not be limited to the young generation. The issues suggested by this study should be discussed as a discoursive practice in the civil society beyond a certain generation and as actual political agenda through press and academic discourses.; Recently, the academic circle and the press actively criticize neoliberalism, but the global and regional influence of neoliberalism is still valid.
