최순성(崔舜星)의 행적에 나타난 협객(俠客) 면모 고찰

Abstract

본고에서는 박지원, 이가환, 이면백, 김택영이 서술한 최순성의 행적을 일화별로 살펴보고, 그 결과를 협객의 연원 및 조선 후기에 숭상된 협객의 특성과 비교하여 최순성이 협객임을 논의하였다. 먼저 최순성이 재물을 활용하여 주변 사람들을 원조한 것은 󰡔소학󰡕이나 장자의 사례뿐만 아니라 협객의 일화에서도 확인할 수 있었다. 그런데 최순성이 주변 사람들을 대등하게 대우하고 자기를 희생하여 그들에게 지극정성을 다한 사실, 여러 생활적 문제나 송사를 해결한 점, 세상의 비난을 마다하지 않은 점, 수혜자들의 긍정적 반응이 서술된 점 등을 종합적으로 고려하면 최순성은 협객의 면모가 다분하였다. 다음으로 서술자들이 최순성의 협객의 면모를 서술하지 않은 까닭을 확증 편향의 경향 때문이라고 추론하고 그 이유를 아래와 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 서술자들은 자신의 신념 및 확신에 부합하지 않은 정보나 근거를 찾는 데 노력을 기울이지 않았을 것이다. 둘째, 개성 사람이라는 이유로 타자화되었을 최순성이 사회적으로 인정받는 존재로 평가될 수 있도록 지배 계급의 시선에서 그의 행적을 서술하는 과정에서 지배 계급이 부정적으로 인식한 협객의 면모를 간과하거나 생략했을 것이다. Examining writing of Park Ji-Won, writing of Lee Ga-Hwan, writing of Lee Myeon-Baek, and writing of Kim Taeg-Young concerned with the trace of the past of Choi Sun-Seong, comparing the analysis results with the origin of chivalrous person and characteristic of chivalrous person in the late of Chosun Dinasty, it was confirmed that Choi Sun-Seong was chivalrous person. The fact that Choi Sun-Seong assisted surrounding people making use of his wealth was confirmed in examples in 『Sohak』, examples of a man of moral influence or a wealthy man, and examples of chivalrous person. By the way considering overall for Choi Sun-Seong to treat equally surrounding people and help them with all his heart sacrificing himself, to solve living problems or a lawsuit, not to be afraid of reproach of the world, and for writers to describe affirmative responses of recipients, Choi Sun-Seong was full of aspect of chivalrous person. Next I inferred the cause that writers did not make a remark about aspect of chivalrous person of Choi Sun-Seong as below. That was because of confirmation bias. First, writers did not make efforts to find information or bases being discrepant their own convictions. Second, writers ignored or omitted aspect of chivalrous person of Choi Sun-Seong that the ruling class cognized negatively, getting rid of prejudice against a person of Gaeseong and describing the trace of the past of Choi Sun-Seong in the view of the ruling class to make Choi Sun-Seong to be evaluated as a person who was appreciated socially.
