독일의 디지털 역사학 현황

Abstract

북미의 디지털인문학이 원심력을 보이고 있다면 유럽의 디지털 인문학은 구심력을 보인다고 평가되고 있다. 미국에 비해 상대적으로 후발주자인 유럽의 경우 주로 정부지원을 통해서 디지털화가 이어지고 있기 때문이다. DARIAH, CLARIN 등을 필두로 하여 유럽전역에서 3,500개의 기관이 참여한 유럽의 디지털문화 플랫폼인 EUROPEANA, 유로피아나의 독일판인 www-digitale-bibliothek 등 대규모 플랫폼들이 다수 개발되었고, “Intentional archive” 혹은 “thematic research archive” 등도 만들어졌다.이와 같은 역사학 자료의 디지털화를 넘어서 “디지털 역사학” 분야의 연구들이 본격적으로 출간되고 있다. 디지털 역사학이 독일역사학계에서 얼마나 받아들여졌는지를 알려주는 지표는 독일역사학대회 발표문이라 할 것이다. 2012년 독일역사학대회에서 독일역사가협회 산하 연구그룹으로 “디지털 역사학”이 만들어졌고, 아직 경험적인 연구성과들이 많이 보이기보다는 여전히 방법론적인 모색과 논의에 집중하고 있는 상황이기는 하지만, 2012년부터 각각 4~6개 섹션을 확보해오는 등 성과를 보이고 있다.구체적인 디지털인문학 연구 성과들은 Semantic web, Digitale Edition, GIS-Visualization, Text mining, Network analysis 등으로 구분될 수 있으며, 이 글에서는 매핑 연구인 “1800년 이래 유럽 역사학의 디지털 지도”, 토픽 모델링과 텍스트마이닝 파트에서 “아동의 세계”, 네트워크 분석 관련해서는 베를린에 생존한 유대인 조력자 네트워크 분석에 대해 소개했다.이러한 연구들이 기존의 양적인 접근과 유사한 방법론이라거나 새로운 역사학적인 방법론을 제시하는 선까지 나아가지 못하고 있다는 비판이 있지만, 의미있는 여러 연구 결과들을 보여주고 있다는 점을 부정하기는 어려워 보인다. 결국, 향후 역사가들의 연구는 “디지털이냐 아날로그냐”가 아니라 “얼마나 디지털이냐”일 수밖에 없을 것이다. If the digital humanities in North America are demonstrating a centrifugal force, the digital humanities in Europe are evaluated to be centripetal. In Europe, which is a relative latecomer when compared to the US, digitization is continuing mainly through government support. DARIAH, CLARIN, and a number of large-scale platforms such as EUROPEANA, a European digital culture platform with 3,500 institutions across Europe, and www-digitale-bibliothek, a German version of EUROPEANA, as well as many “International archives” were representative.Beyond such digitization of the historical materials, research in the field of “digital history” has been continuously published. The “Digital History” was created as a separate research group under the German Historians’ Association in the 2012.Although there is criticism that the digital history just resembles the existing quantitative approach or did not suggest a new historical methodology, it is undeniable that the Digital History already showed a number of meaningful research results. Ultimately, future historical researches should not be “either digital or analog” but rather “how much digital”.
