『묵자』의 기술관 연구

Abstract

제4차 산업혁명시대를 맞이해서, 인류는 기술의 발전에 자신을 맞추는 것이 아니라, 자신의 목적에 맞게 기술개발 방향을 설정해야 한다. 모든 기술개발은 좋은 사회를 만드는 방향으로 진행되어야 한다. 동서고금을 막론하고 자신들이 지향하는 좋은 사회와 좋은 기술이란 ‘보편적 사랑’과 ‘공동의 이익’이 실현된 사회 그리고 이러한 사회를 실현시킬 수 있는 기술이라고 말할 것이다. 그런데 우리는 고대 중국의 철학자이고 기술자인 묵자가 말한 ‘겸상애’와 ‘교상리’를 현대어로 ‘보편적 사랑’과 ‘공동의 이익’으로 번역할 수 있다. 그러므로 논자는 묵자의 기술 철학을 조명하고 이를 기초로 우리 시대의 기술개발 방향을 조망해 보는 것도 매우 의미 있는 작업이라고 생각한다. 묵자는 기술개발이 인민의 이익에 부합하는 방향으로 나아가야 한다고 주장한다. 그가 말한 인민의 이익이란 오감의 즐거움과 사지의 편안함이 아니라, 필요한 의식주 문제의 해결이다. 묵가 철학의 핵심은 ‘겸상애, 교상리’이다. ‘교상리’의 관점에서 볼 때, 묵자의 기술철학에서 기술자가 인민의 생활을 이롭게 하는 실용적 도구를 인민에게 공급하는 것이 중요하지만, 기술개발을 통해 얻은 자신의 이익을 사회경제적 약자에게 나누어 주는 것도 중요하다. ‘겸상애’의 관점에서 볼 때, 묵자의 기술철학에서 기술자의 기술개발은 자기 지역과 자기 세대뿐만 아니라, 모든 지역과 모든 세대의 이해득실을 고려해서 진행되어야 한다. 묵자는 ‘겸상애’와 ‘교상리’가 가치 충돌을 일으킬 때, ‘겸상애’를 우선시한다. 그는 ‘겸상애’ 에 기초한 ‘교상리’만이 공동체의 이익을 창출할 수 있다고 주장한다. 특히, 묵자는 계층간 사회경제적 차이에 주목하고, 사회경제적 약자에 대한 배려를 매우 강조한다. 이로 볼 때, 묵자가 말한 ‘인민의 이익’은 ‘사회경제적 약자의 이익’이다. 그리고 묵자가 지향하는 기술개발의 좋은 방향은 사회경제적 약자의 이익을 최우선으로 고려하는 것이다. 우리는 제4차 산업혁명시대에 살아가고 있지만, 세계는 여전히 빈곤과 기아를 걱정하고 또한 새로운 기술개발로 사회적 양극화는 더욱 심화되고 많은 사람들이 실업의 위기에 직면하고 있다. 제4차 산업혁명이 지금 보다 더 좋은 사회를 지향하는 것이라면, 우리는 묵자의 기술 철학을 참고할 필요가 있다. While in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, human beings need to establish the direction of technological development for their own purpose, rather than fitting themselves into the technology development. All of the technological development needs to progress towards making good society. Regardless of all times and places, people pursue a good technology and a good society. A good society is defined as a society fulfilled with universal love and public good. A good technology is defined as the technology promoting the society having universal love and public good. The saying, “inclusively caring for each other and mutually benefiting each other” mentioned by Mozi, a Chinese philosopher and engineer, can be interpreted as universal love and public good. Therefore, it is meaningful to prospect the direction of technology development of our time on the basis of Mozi’s philosophical perspective of technology. Mozi conveys the need for the progression of technology development to be for the benefit of the people. In accordance with Mozi’s philosophical view, the real benefit of people is the resolving problems that associate with their daily life, not their emotional pleasure and physical comfort. The core idea of Mozi’s philosophy is “inclusively caring for each other and mutually benefiting each other”. In Mozi’s philosophical view of “mutually benefiting each other”, it is substantial for engineers to provide people with practical tools that benefit people’s lives; moreover, it is important that the personal benefit earned by technological development should be shared with the disadvantaged. In Mozi’s philosophical view of “inclusively caring for each other”, the technological development of engineers should continue to accelerate in growth in consideration of not only the benefit of own region and present generation, but for also other regions and for the advantage towards future generations. Mozi puts “inclusively caring for each other” above “mutually benefiting each other” when there is a conflict between “inclusively caring for each other” and “mutually benefiting each other”. He says that only "mutually benefiting each other" based on “inclusively caring for each other” can create public good. Particularly, Mozi takes interested in the social polarization among social classes and emphasizes the benefit of the disadvantaged. Namely, the benefit of the people that Mozi said is the benefit of the disadvantaged. The good direction of technology development of Mozi is considering the benefit of the disadvantaged to become the top priority. Although people live in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the world is still suffering from poverty and starvation, the gap between the rich and the poor deepens caused by the new technology development, and in addition, many people face with the crisis of mass unemployment. If the Fourth Industrial Revolution aims to make a better society, it is necessary to use Mozi’s philosophy of technology for reference.
