향가 연구 방법론 -공과 한계, 지향점-

Abstract

근대적 방법론과 비평이론으로 향가를 연구한 지 100주년이 되었다. 이에 실증주의에서 기호학에 이르기까지 향가 텍스트를 비평이론이나 연구방법론을 통해 문학적으로 해석한 연구에 한정하여 공과 한계를 살펴보고 앞으로 향가 연구가 지향할 바를 모색하였다.향가에 대한 근대적 연구는 나름대로 장점도 있었고 단점도 있었다. 역사·실증주의 연구는 실증 자료를 통하여 관련된 객관적 실증을 복원하는 데 공헌하였지만 문학성을 상실하였다. 마르크스주의 연구는 향가의 사회경제적 맥락을 밝히는 대신, 향가의 해석을 그 맥락에 종속시켰다. 반면에, 형식주의, 구조주의, 기호학의 연구는 향가의 문학성과 시학, 구조적 의미를 드러냈지만, 맥락에 바탕을 둔 해석을 소거시켰다. 민속학적 연구는 향가와 관련설화의 주술적인 요인을 밝혀내는 데는 탁월했지만 주술성이 없는 분야에 대해서는 거의 목소리를 내지 못하였다. 정신분석학적 연구는 향가나 관련 설화에 관련된 인물의 내면심리, 무의식, 욕망을 잘 드러냈지만, 서정 양식으로서 향가의 특성을 드러내지 못한 채 노래 텍스트와 관련설화와 결합하여 구성한 서사 속의 인물의 심리분석에만 치중하는 단점을 갖는다. 화쟁시학은 이런 단점을 극복하려고 형식주의와 맑시즘을 종합하였고, 향가 텍스트를 내재적으로 분석하여 시학적 해석을 하여 서정성과 문학성을 드러내면서도 사회문화적 맥락과 종합한 해석을 하였다. 하지만, 그 평가는 후학에게 맡긴다. 문화사적 연구는 서정주체를 중심으로 문화사의 기반 위에서 서정적 의미와 수신자의 효용적 의미를 드러내는 데 성공했지만, 좀더 구조적이고 기호학적인 심층 분석이 필요하다.근대의 종점에 서서 보면 향가의 근대성을 완성하려면 아직 더 많은 노력이 더 필요하다. 2018년 오늘 향가의 근대를 넘어서서 지향해야 할 향가의 탈근대는 무엇일까. 동일성에서 차이로, 가부장주의에서 페미니즘으로, 오리엔탈리즘에서 탈식민론으로, 미메시스론에서 판타지론으로, 인간중심주의에서 생태론으로, 주체중심주의에서 해체와 타자성(alterity)으로 전환하는 것이다. 민족주의와 오리엔탈리즘, 근대적 국가관을 넘어서 동아시아의 지평에서 해석하는 것 또한 필요하다. It has been 100 years since Hyangga began to be studied using modern methodologies and criticism. Various methodologies ranging from positivism to semiotics have been applied in Hyangga studies. I will explore the merits and limitations of these methodologies and recommend the future direction of studying Hyangga.Modern research on Hyangga has advantages and disadvantages. Positivist and historical studies contributed to restoring objective substantiation through related data, but fail to examine literariness. The Marxist study, instead of revealing the socio-economic context of Hyangga, limited the interpretation of Hyangga to its context. In contrast, the study of formalism, structuralism, and semiology adequately explained the literariness and structural meanings of Hyangga, but failed to offer contextual interpretation. Folklore studies have revealed the magical elements of Hyangga and related folktales, but have scarcely given a voice to the field without referring to magic. Psychoanalytic research revealed the internal psychology, unconsciousness, and desire of the character in Hyangga and folktales, but it focused on the psychological analysis of the character without revealing the characteristics of Hyangga as a lyric style. Hwajaeng-poetics synthesized formalism and Marxism to overcome these shortcomings, and implicitly analyzed Hyangga's text by conducting a poetic, contextual, and comprehensive interpretation. I hope future scholars would evaluate this theory and interprtation.From a modern perspective, more work is needed to complete the modernity of Hyangga. What is the post-modern study on Hyangga that should be directed beyond the present day? The answer is transition: from identity to difference, from paternalism to feminism, from orientalism to post-colonialism, from mimesis to fantasy, from anthropocentrism to ecology, and from subjectivity to inter-subjectivity and alterity. Now these studies needs to be interpreted in the horizon of East Asia beyond nationalism, orientalism, and modern state view.
