약수터 운동에서 올림픽 효자종목으로: 한국 배드민턴의 대중화와 발전과정에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 생활체육으로 한국 배드민턴의 대중화와 엘리트 스포츠로서의 발전과정에 대해 분석했다. 생활체육으로 한국 배드민턴의 대중화는 비교적 좁은 공간에서 적은 비용으로 즐길 수 있는 배드민턴 종목의 특징이 중요하게 작용했다. 이를 바탕으로 배드민턴은 1970년대부터 동호회 조직이 전국적으로 확산되면서 현재 2백만~3백만에 이르는 동호인 인구를 가지게 됐다. 한편, 엘리트 스포츠로 한국 배드민턴은 1980년대에 한국 배드민턴은 황선애의 전영 오픈 대회 우승을 기점으로 세계적 강호로 부상했고 배드민턴이 올림픽 정식종목이 되는 1992년부터 올림픽 메달 유망 종목으로 각광받았다. 이 과정에서 한국 배드민턴의 국제대회 성과는 생활체육의 활성화를 이끌었고 늘어난 생활체육 인구는 대한배드민턴협회가 용품사의 거액의 스폰서십을 통해 경제적으로 자립하는 데에 기여했다.This study attempts to analyse the popularization of Korean badminton as a participation sport and the development process of it as an elite sport. The popularization of Korean badminton has been impacted by the badminton’s characteristics of being able to practice with a relatively low cost in a little space. Building on these merits, badminton clubs began to disseminate nationwide from the 1970s developing enough to have 2~3 million members at present. Meanwhile Korean badminton began to rise as a power house starting from Hwang’s victory at the All-England Badminton Championships and took center stage as a medal winning event from the 1992 Olympic Games, the first Olympics including badminton as its program. In this process, the achievements of Korean badminton in the international stage impacted on the invigoration of the participation sport, and increased badminton club members contributed to Korean Badminton Association’s financial independence through a large sum of sponsorship from goods suppliers.
