Where the majority of South Korean films about the Japanese colonial era tend to adopt a nationalist point of view, director Lee Joonik’s works Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet(2016) and Anarchist from Colony(2017) demonstrate an anarchist perspective. The chronology for this is as follows: First, Lee Joonik produced Anarchists(2000), which shows his early interest in Anarchism. Second, following a period of hesitation, films about the Japanese colonial era began to be more actively produced. Third, despite often being indirect alluded to or obliquely presented, anarchist characters and organizations began to appear more often in Korean films. This enabled Lee Joonik was able to raise and develop a discussion on anarchism through the character of Song Mong-gyu in Dongju, and later, more explicitly explore those themes in Anarchist from Colony. The main characters of both films are far from nationalistic heroes. And the two films repeatedly insert a scenes of interrogation in a police station or courts of law. These scenes are not only effective in criticizing the fascist aspect of Japanese colonization, but also effective in explaining to Korean audiences the unfamiliar concept of anarchism in an engaging way. This paper seeks to examine these tendencies and strategies of the director as an important aspect of the movie, separate from an analysis of the movie’s production value.en_US
