Abstract
This study investigated shading effect by urban street buildings of Gangnam-dae road and Teheran road in Seoul, Korea and examined the appropriateness of street tree planting. Sunlight simulation results using Sanalyst 4.0 indicated that sidewalks were exposed to direct sunlight between 10 AM to 11 AM on the west side of Gangnam-dae road, between 12 PM and 14 PM on the east side of Gangnam-dae road and on the north side of Teheran road, and between 15 PM and 16 PM on the south side of Teheran road. The street tree planting condition of the case study area was 0.844 trees/10 m on the west side of Gangnam-dae road, 0.441 trees/10 m on the east side of Gangnam-dae road, 1.475 trees/10 m on the north side of Teheran road, and 1.662 trees/10 m on the south side of Teheran road. Analysis results showed that Gangnam-dae road had not only less shading effect by urban street buildings, but also less street trees. In contrast, Teheran road had higher level of shading effect by urban street buildings and had a plenty of street trees, improving pedestrian’s walking comfort during the summer. This study pointed out the importance of shading effect by urban street buildings with the appropriate planting of street trees in urban planning and design practices.
