休休子 具康의 암행어사 일기 연구

Abstract

구강은 1812년(순조 13) 가을에 함경도 暗行御史에 임명되어 다음해 봄까지 임무를 수행했다. 이때의 체험을 바탕으로 일기인 『休休子自註行路編日記』를 썼고, 국문 가사 「北塞曲」을 남겼다.구강의 『休休子自註行路編日記』는 174일 동안의 함경도 암행어사 기록을 담고 있다. 한문 일기이지만 한문학에서는 본격적인 연구가 없었고, 지금껏 가사 연구의 보조 자료로만 사용됐다. 그의 일기는 기왕에 소개된 암행어사 일기와 비교해 볼 때 매우 가치 있는 기록의 의미를 띤다.출발 전이나 출발 후에 현지에서 경비를 조달하는 방식은 다른 암행어사 일기에서는 볼 수 없었던 기록이다. 또, 先文과 關文, 각종 等狀과 뎨김[題音], 치죄의 상황이 소상히 나와서 실제 암행어사의 공무 수행을 파악하기에 용이하다. 다음으로 의식주를 중심으로 공무 수행의 어려움을 충실히 기록해 두었다. 북방의 맹수들과 함경도의 험한 지리는 수행 기간 내내 생명에 위협을 주었고, 한겨울의 강추위와 폭설은 암행어사 일정을 지연시키는 주범이었다. 함경도는 서울내기에게는 異國이라고 할 수 있을 정도의 문화적 충격을 주었다.구강은 매우 수준 높은 위트를 구사했고, 그런 점은 수행원들과의 유연한 관계에도 한몫했다. 사람들 사이의 사연과 부딪친 상황은 그의 일기 속에서 대부분 대화체로 표현되고 있다. 대화체가 자주 사용되니 상황이 입체적으로 보이고, 몰입도를 높이면서 읽는 재미까지 배가시킨다. 묘사에도 탁월한 재주가 있어 마치 옆에서 그 일을 목도하듯, 풍경을 바라보듯 생생함을 가져다준다.Year 13 of the reign of King Soon-jo, Gugang was appointed as the secret royal inspector to Hamgyeongdo province and he carried out his duties until the spring of next year. Based on this experience, he wrote his diary “The Journals of Hyuhyuja (休休子自註行路編日記)” and the Korean lyrics “Puksaegok.” Gugang’s book “Hyuhyuja” or “The Journals of Hyuhyuja” records his 174 days of activity as the Secret Royal Inspector in Hamgyeongdo province. Despite being written in Chinese characters, no serious research was done by Chinese classics scholars and, to this point, it was merely being used as supplemental material for lyrical research. His diary, compared to other known secret royal inspector diaries, is a very worthwhile record.The record of his method of procuring funds prior to departure or on-site is a first that cannot be found in other diaries of the secret royal inspectors. In addition, his “Sun-moon (official notice of arrival),” “Kwan-moon (document addressed to a lower official),” “Deung-jang (an appeal under joint signatures)” and “Jae-keum (official ruling to an appeal)” which details the punishment of a crime is useful for understanding the role of the secret royal inspector performing his public duties. The diary next keeps a faithful record of the difficulties related to the performance of public office, particularly in regard to the basic necessities of life. The predatory animals of the norther province and the rough terrain of Hamgyeondo province remained life-threatening throughout his tour of duty. And, the extreme cold of winter and heavy snow were main culprits responsible for delaying the schedule of the secret royal inspector. Hamgyeondo province provided the Seoulite author a culture shock equal to that of a foreign country.Gugang displays a very high level of wit, and it this has contributed to a flexible relationship with his entourage. The conflict situations among people he encountered is mostly expressed through a conversational style in his diary. Since the conversational style is often used, the situation looks three- dimensional, increasing the flow of immersion and doubling the fun of reading. The author has a particular talent for description, so his narrative provides a vividness that creates a feeling of closely witnessing the event and viewing the scene as it unfolds.
