Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the regeneration and re-use of modern architecture through community engagement. The deterioration of aging buildings causes that they are becoming vacant and left unmanaged. As a result, the property values and the surrounding environment have declined. For sustainable management of modern architecture, the value and usefulness in the modern society need to be improved. To address this issue, this study focuses on the case of Fukuoka DIY renovation in Japan started by private-driven activities. This study was conducted in three parts. First, it classified the types of activities and actors related to the regeneration and re-use of modern architecture in Fukuoka. Second, it analyzed the relationship and characteristics of activities investigated using the DEMATEL method. Third, it examined the performance capability of stakeholders by drawing the Power-Interest Matrix. The case of Fukuoka DIY renovation shows that the private-driven projects have been extended to the civic groups’ activities accompanied with diverse programs and regional expansion. The case indicates the importance of each actors’ role and status who involve each activity concerning the regeneration and re-use of modern architecture. In particular, the civic groups perform a role as an intermediary actor to connect a variety of actors and their activities. The community engagement will contribute to sustainable management including the re-use of aging buildings and urban regeneration.
