나움 슬룻츠키(Naum Slutzky)의 장신구에 관한 연구

Abstract

나움 슬룻츠키는 비록 현대 장신구에 커다란 영향을 끼쳤으나 그다지 밝혀지지 않은 장신구 작가이다. 이 논문에서는 그의 예술적 성장단계를 밝히면서 그가 현대장신구에 끼친 영향의 요인들을 밝혀보려고 했다. 그가 활동한 시대적 배경은 아르누보, 비인공방, 바우하우스, 아르데코 등이 상이한 양식실험을 하던 시기였고 비인공방과 이텐 사립미술학교, 바우하우스를 거치면서 금속공예가로서 활동한다. 그런 그의 장신구의 중요한 특징들을 살펴보면 첫째로 기계 산업시대의 기계미학과 모더니즘을 반영한 기하학적 추상형태를 들 수 있다. 그것은 그의 성장단계에서 그의 개성적인 형태로 구체화되면서 현대 디자인을 선취했다고 여겨질 수 있는 그런 정형성을 띤다. 둘째로 그는 재료에 대한 지속적인 실험에서 새로운 재료의 사용과 재료의 물성을 강조하는 작업에 치중했다. 그는 특히 화려하고 값비싸며 착용자의 사회적 위상을 드러내주는 관점에서 재료를 선택한 것이 아니라 장신구의 심미적인 조형성을 위한 재료의 물성을 중요시 한다. 셋째로 그는 대량 생산될 수 있는 단순하고 기능적인 장신구 디자인도 실험하고 있다. 특히 그의 보석을 교체할 수 있는 반지의 난집 구조라든지 새로운 난집 형태의 개발은 오늘날까지도 많은 유명 장신구디자인 브랜드회사나 작가에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 이 모든 특징에 바탕을 이루는 것은 무엇보다도 그가 전 생애동안 내내 장신구라는 매체에 대해 - 형태, 재료, 신체와의 관계에 대해 생각하고 고민하면서 새로운 실험을 하고 있다는 점이다. 이로써 장신구는 더 이상 전통적인 의미의 장신구가 아닌 새로운 장신구로서, 즉, 현대장신구 탄생의 지평을 조금씩 넓혀갈 수 있는 정신적 토대를 마련하게 되었다.

Although he had great influence on modern Jewelry, Naum Slutzky hasn't been known well to the world. His influences on modern Jewelry and artistic development will be revealed in this thesis. It was the period of Art Nouveau, Wiener Werksraette, Bauhaus, Art Deco experimenting similar styles. He had studied at Wiener Werksraette, Ittens private Kunstschule and Bauhaus and became a metal craftsman. Under their influence, the major feature in his works is geometric forms reflecting mechanic aesthetics in the period of industrialism and modernism. This feature had become specified as he went through and showed standardization which made him considered as a pioneer in modern design. The second feature is that he put effort on the work using new materials and highlighting their quality in his continuous experiments with various materials. Most of all, he put great importance on the quality of materials suitable for aesthetic forms of Jewelry instead of choosing materials which could be made into extravagant and expensive Jewelry for the wearers of high status. Thirdly, he also produced Jewelry of simple and functional designs which can be produced in great quantity.In particular, ston setting which can replace jewels and related new inventions have great influence on a lot of artists and companies with renowned Jewelry until today. All of these features are the result of his life-long speculated and anguished experiment on the medium of Jewelry - forms, materials and human body. Therefore, he set the keystone which boosted the birth of modern Jewelry out of its traditional role.
