Abstract
Titanium dioxide containing cementitious composites are used in the exterior of the buildings and infrastructure for self-cleaning and air-purifying purposes. Such cementitious materials are also known as photocatalytic cementitious materials. These materials can be used to repair spalling damages in the concrete buildings and infrastructure. But these ecofriendly materials can be exposed to the aggressive exposure conditions such as acid rain, runoff water and will be subjected to the deterioration due to the leaching of calcium. The knowledge of various aggressive conditions upon hardened, microstructural, self-cleaning performance of photocatalytic cementitious materials is necessary. For this purpose, the performance of titanium dioxide containing cement mortars in various aggressive mediums (leaching, sulfate, acid rain, carbon dioxide and chloride) was studied. In the first phase this research, the effect of leaching attack on titanium dioxide (TiO2) containing mortars was investigated. Changes in the mechanical properties, microstructure, photocatalytic activity, and wettability of the mortars were studied with the leaching attack. The photocatalytic mortars were made with ordinary Portland cement. TiO2 was added at 0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, and 6% of the binder weight. After curing for 90 days in saturated limewater, the mortars were immersed in 6M ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) solution for 140 days. The leaching depth, loss of compressive and flexural strengths, changes in porosity, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) were measured. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests were conducted to investigate the microstructural damages. The effects of leaching on the photocatalytic performance were evaluated by observing rhodamine B discoloration on the controlled and leached mortars. The wettability of the mortars was evaluated by measuring the static contact angle on the mortars surface. Experimental results showed that the addition of TiO2 increased the resistance of the mortars to the leaching attack; the loss of hardened properties and microstructural changes were reduced with the addition of TiO2. The leached mortars showed photocatalytic activity and hydrophilicity after exposure to ultraviolet light, however, these properties were slightly reduced after the leaching attack. In the second phase of this research, the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on the sulfate attack resistance of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and slag-blended mortars were investigated. OPC and slag-blended mortars (OPC: Slag = 50:50) were made with water to binder ratio of 0.4 and a binder to sand ratio of 1:3. TiO2 was added as an admixture as 0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of the binder weight. Mortar specimens were exposed to an accelerated sulfate attack environment. Expansion, changes in mass and surface microhardness were measured. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) tests were conducted. The formation of ettringite and gypsum crystals after the sulfate attack were detected. Both these products had caused crystallization pressure in the microstructure of mortars and deteriorated the mortars. Our results show that the addition of nano-TiO2 accelerated expansion, variation in mass, loss of surface microhardness and widened cracks in OPC and slag-blended mortars. Because nano-TiO2 reduced the size of coarse pores, so it increased crystallization pressure due to the formation of ettringite and gypsum thus led to more damage under sulfate attack. Nano-TiO2 containing slag-blended mortars were more resistant to sulfate attack than nano- TiO2 containing OPC mortars. In the third phase, nano titanium dioxide have been added in ordinary Portland cement mortars and its performance in simulated acid rain, chloride attack and carbonation environments were measured. The dosage of nano-TiO2 was varied from 0%-4%. Water/binder ratio was 0.45 and binder/sand ratio was 1:3. Compressive and flexural strengths of mortars were measured. The permeability of the mortars was measured using rapid chloride penetration test. Mortars were exposed to an aggressive carbonated environment and the penetration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the mortars was measured. Mortars were exposed to a solution of a simulated acid rain. Variation of physical and hardened properties was measured. The degradation of rhodamine B dye on the surface of deteriorated mortars was measured after exposure of the mortars to the ultraviolet light. Results showed the positive effects of adding TiO2 on physical and hardened properties in aggressive environment.
