Abstract
Lithium-sulfur battery has been considered as promising next-generation battery for electric vehicles, portable electronic devices and grid-scale energy storage systems due to its high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1), low cost, environmental friendliness and natural abundance of sulfur. Despite these advantages, the dissolution of lithium polysulfides and their migration to the lithium anode are main problems to be solved for commercialization of Li-S batteries. In this study, we report hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTOH) as lithium polysulfide adsorbent and carbon substrate in the sulfur cathode. CNTOH/sulfur composite cathode was prepared by a physical compression method to increase sulfur mass loading (3.01 ~ 3.70 mg cm-2). Hydroxyl groups on CNTOH exhibited a strong chemical interaction with polysulfides and confined polysulfides effectively in the cathode. As a result, the lithium-sulfur cell assembled with CNTOH/sulfur composite electrode exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 1104 mAh g-1 (corresponding to an areal capacity of 3.33 mAh cm-2) and good capacity retention of 67.0 % after 300 cycles at 0.2 C rate.
