바그너의 음악극 <파르지팔>의 콘서트용 발췌곡에 관한 연구

Abstract

바그너는 독일 후기 낭만시대의 대표적인 오페라 작곡가이다. 그러나 ‘음악극’으로 불리는 그의 오페라는 국내에서 자주 공연되지 않으며, 오케스트라의 콘서트에서도 제한된 수의 서곡과 간주곡들만이 종종 연주될 뿐이다. 그 이유 중 하나는 ‘바그너리안’이라 불리는 전문 애호가 그룹 이외의 일반 청중에게는, 공연 시간이 대여섯 시간에 이르고 신화와 전설 속의 이야기가 장황하게 펼쳐지는 바그너의 음악극이 이해되기 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 그러나 최근 들어 국내의 콘서트에서 몇 차례 연주된 적이 있는 바그너 음악극의 ‘발췌곡’은 짧은 시간 안에 음악극의 하이라이트를 감상할 수 있다는 점에서 일반 청중에게는 바그너의 음악세계에 입문할 수 있는 좋은 기회이다. 이러한 발췌곡은 음악극의 여러 곳에서 발췌한 음악을 유기적으로 연결하여 마치 한편의 교향시인 것처럼 연주될 수 있도록 편곡한 것으로, 특정한 하나의 버전만 있는 것이 아니라 편곡자의 의도에 따라 다양한 버전이 존재한다. 특히 바그너의 마지막 음악극인 <파르지팔>은 발췌곡의 원작으로서 선호도가 높아, 단일 음악극으로는 그 발췌곡이 가장 많이 존재하는 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 발췌곡의 의미와 바그너의 음악극이 발췌곡으로 연주될 수 있는 있는 이유를 논하고, 존재하는 많은 수의 <파르지팔> 발췌곡 중 그 개별적 특징이 분명한 다섯 개의 발췌곡들을 선택하여 그 구성 방법을 분석하였으며, 마지막으로 필자가 편집하고 연주한 발췌곡을 소개하였다. 이러한 발췌곡의 분석을 통해 <파르지팔> 뿐 아니라 다른 바그너의 음악극을 직접 발췌하여 ‘관현악 버전’으로 연주해 보기를 원하는 지휘자나, 콘서트 레퍼토리의 확장에 대해 고민하는 기획자, 오케스트라에 작은 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.; Wagner is one of the greatest opera composers from the late Romanticism period in Germany. Being called music dramas, his operas are not performed often in the nation with limited numbers of preludes and interludes performed at even orchestra concerts. One of the reasons is that his music dramas, which last five to six hours and develop stories of myths and legends in lengthy ways, are not easy to understand among the general public, who are not part of the expert enthusiast group of his music called Wagnerians. In recent years, however, some concerts in the nation have performed excerpts from his music dramas. They present a great opportunity for the general public to enter the musical world of Wagner by allowing the public to appreciate highlights of his music dramas in a short duration of time. Excerpts are arranged in a way so that pieces from different parts of a music drama are connected organically and performed like a symphonic poem. There can be various versions of an excerpt according to the intentions of the arrangers. Wagner's last music drama, Parsifal, enjoys an especially high preference as an original work of an excerpt. It has the most excerpts as a single music drama. This study discusses the meanings of the excerpts and the reasons behind the performance of Wagner's music dramas as excerpts, selecting five from the many Parsifal excerpts for their clear individual characteristics, and analyzes them in composition methods, Finally, the study introduces an excerpt edited and performed by the investigator. The analysis results of excerpts are expected to help conductors wishing to create an excerpt from Wagner's other music dramas, as well as Parsifal, and perform them in an orchestral music version so that planners and orchestras can contemplate over the expansion of concert repertoires.
