노인영화의 연출 미학과 제작 과정 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 기존 노인영화의 개념과 다양한 미학적 특징을 바탕으로 단편영화 <오래된 시계>의 연출 미학과 제작과정을 분석하는 것에 주된 목적이 있다. 본고는 기존 노인영화로 분류되어진 영화들의 ‘캐릭터와 스토리’ 및 ‘미장센’에 대해 연구하여 그 내용을 토대로 <오래된 시계>의 연출 미학과 제작과정 속에서 노인영화의 특징들이 어떻게 활용되며 이미지화 되는지 분석했다. 기존 노인영화 연구를 위해 우선 노인영화의 개념을 정의하고 2000년 이후 개봉된 노인영화 <어바웃 슈미트>, <그랜토리노>, <아무르>, <님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오>, <인턴>, <앙: 단팥 인생이야기>, <죽여주는 여자>, <나, 다니엘블레이크>을 중심으로 ‘캐릭터와 스토리’, ‘미장센’ 특징을 집중적으로 분석했다. 노인영화의 ‘캐릭터와 스토리’는‘질병과 죽음’, ‘고독과 소외’, ‘경험과 연륜’을 주된 소재로 한다. 노인영화의 ‘미장센’은 주로 ‘정적인 쇼트와 자연광’, ‘따뜻한 색감과 차가운 색감’, ‘아날로그 소품’, ‘시간성을 상징하는 메타포’로 표현된다. 이러한 기존 노인영화의 특징을 토대로 <오래된 시계>에 적용된 연출 미학을 분석했다. 본 연구의 대상인 <오래된 시계>는 독거노인의 소외감을 다룬 21분의 단편영화이다. <오래된 시계>의 주인공은 기존 노인영화의 캐릭터 유형 중 하나인 ‘고독과 소외를 느끼는 주인공’으로 설정했고 ‘경험과 연륜이 있는 주변인물’과의 관계도 다루었으며 ‘고독과 소외를 다루는 스토리’로 이야기를 전개했다. 또한 ‘정적인 쇼트와 자연광’, ‘따뜻한 색감과 차가운 색감’, ‘아날로그 소품’, ‘시간성을 상징하는 메타포’으로 미학적 방식을 활용했다. 덧붙여 제작과정에서의 ‘노인배우 캐스팅’, ‘세월이 느껴지는 공간 섭외’, ‘사실적인 의상 구축’, ‘느린 호흡의 편집’, ‘시간의 흐름을 나타내는 사운드 디자인’과정을 통해 ‘캐릭터와 스토리’, ‘미장센’을 뒷받침 하고자 했다. <오래된 시계>의 연출 미학을 구축하고 제작하는 데 있어 겪었던 고민과 한계점 또한 밝힘으로서 노인영화 제작에 도움이 될 만한 의견을 제시해 보았다.; The purpose of this study is to analyze the production aesthetics and production processes of the short film <Old Clock> based on the thematic concept and aesthetic characteristics of movies featuring the elderly. This study examines the "character and storyline" and the "mise-en-scene" under the thematic category of the elderly, and analyzes how such characteristics are incorporated and visualized in the production aesthetics and production processes of <Old Clock>. First and foremost, in order to study the exisisting senior movies, I defined the broad concept of movies that feature old people and focused on analyzing “character and storyline” and “mise-en-scène” of such movies that were released after 2000, namely <About Schmidt>, <Gran Torino>, <Amour>, <My Love, Don’t Cross That River>, <The Intern>, <Sweet Red Bean Paste>, <The Bacchus Lady>and <I, Daniel Blake>. The “character and storyline” of senior movies are primarily characterized by the keywords “disease and death”, “solitude and alienation”, “experience and wisdom from age”. The “mise-en-scène” is depicted in “still shots and natural light”, “warm and cold colors”, “analogue props”, and “metaphors that symbolize the passage of time." This study analyzes the methods of production aesthetics applied in <Old Clock> based on the characteristics and aesthetics of senior movies listed above. The subject of this study, <Old Clock>, is a 21-minute-long short film that discusses the alienation of a lonely old man. The protagonist of <Old Clock> falls into the category of "solitary and alienated" in terms of characters. The movie also covers his relations with "experienced and wise" acquaintance, and unfolds the story of "solitude and alienation." The “still shots and natural light”, “warm and cold colors”, “analogue props”, and “metaphors that symbolize the passage of time” were all implemented for the aesthetics of the movie . Additionally, I supported the said "character and storyline" and "mise-en-scene" of elderly movies with the "casting of senior actors”, “locations that show natural wear and tear”, “designing realistic costumes”, “slow paced editing”, and “sound design that shows the passage of time". I also offered ideas that might prove helpful in production of senior movies through discussing concerns and limits I have faced in sketching, designing, and producing <Old Clock>.
