정의와 젠더를 '다시 찍기': 오리올 빠울로의 ˂더 바디˃와 ˂인비저블 게스트˃

Abstract

Oriol Paulo belongs to the generation of those Spanish filmmakers who have been defining the millenial and international tendencies of Spanish cinema. His two thrillers of globally commercial style, The Body (2012) and The Invisible Guest (2016), include several similar narrative elements, while highlighting at the same time other opposed elements. Among these, the most important are the exercise of justice and the representation of gender. In The Body, a personal justice is sought through personal revenges, while The Invisible Guest respects the public justice carried out by the law and the police system. As for the representation of gender, The Body is misogynist and basically homosocial, while The Invisible Guest turns out to offer some characters and an ending that radically invert the sexism of The Body. These changes seem to originate from Paulo’s reflection on civic awareness and film representation. In this sense, it can be said that The Invisible Guest is a kind of refilming The Body. 오리올 빠울로는 2000년대 이후 두드러진 새로운 스페인 영화의 경향을 만들어가는 감 독 세대에 속한다. 그가 감독한 심리 스릴러 <더 바디>(2012)와 추리극 <인비저블 게스트>(2016) 는 상업적 성공도 획득하면서 감독의 개성도 드러냈다. 서사와 관점에 있어 두 작품 사이에는 공 통적 요소들이 많으나, 그 공통점을 구심점 삼아 정의 구현 방식과 젠더의 재현방식이 크게 변화 하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 정의 구현의 경우, 공권력이 역할을 다하지 못하는 상황에서 <더 바디>에 서는 피해자가 사적 복수를 행하고, <인비저블 게스트>에서는 피해자가 가해자를 이긴 후 다시 시민으로서 제도에 협조하는 공적 정의가 행해진다. 후자에서 더 성숙한 시민의식과 시적 정의 를 발견할 수 있다. 젠더 재현방식의 경우, <더 바디>에서는 여성혐오적인 클리셰가 남용되며 남 성 인물들간의 호모소셜이 중시되나, <인비저블 게스트>에서는 성차별적 편견이라는 허점을 찌 른 반전 속에서 여성 시민 영웅이 탄생한다. 종합적으로 볼 때 <인비저블 게스트>는 <더 바디>의 반성적인 ‘다시 찍기’이며, 정의와 젠더에 대한 감독의 인식 변화는 유기적으로 결합하여 그의 작 품에 고양된 시민의식으로 반영되었다.
