미국 드라마 수용의 즐거움과 온라인 팬덤 - 한국의〈프리즌 브레이크〉 팬카페 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 최근 한국 패에서 미국 드라마의 인기 확산과 팬덤 형성의 접점이 되고 있는 인터넷 팬카페를 초국적(cross-border) 온라인 팬덤의 측면에서 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 〈프리즌 브레이크 (Prison Break)> 관련 온라인 팬카페의 주요 기능과 게시판 글에 대한 양적, 질적 분석을 통해 한국 수용자들이 미국 드라마 수용에서 어떤 즐거움을 얻고 있는지, 온라인 팬덤의 특성이 무엇인지를 밝혀내고자 한다. 분석 결과, 〈프리즌 브레이크〉와 관련된 온라인 팬카페의 주요 기능은 즉각적이고 동시적인 접근성, 정보공유, 평가와 해석적 참여 등으로 나타났다. 한편 대표성을 띄는 두 개의 팬카페 게시판에 나타난 미국 드라마 수용의 즐거움은 미국 드라마의 텍스트적 특성과 연관된 ‘감정적 밀착과 몰입’과 ‘지적 긴장감과 호기심의 충족’으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 이러한 분석결과가 한국 사회에서의 초국적 온라인 팬덤 논의와 연관하여 어떤 함의를 갖고 있는지를 논의하였다.

This study aims to explore why American TV dramas are hugely popular in Korea and what constitutes the cross-border online fandom in Internet fan cafes. Among the many factors behind such popularity analyzed in this study, this study places 'pleasure' and 'emotional engagement' at the center of Korea's recent cross-border fandom towards American dramas. This study closely analyzed the contents of bulletin boards of online fan cafe on Prison Break, which is regarded, so far, as the most popular American TV series in Korea. The results of content analysis of two major fan cafes showed that the most frequently discussed themes are 'personal preference,' 'exchange of updated information on narrative,' and 'evaluation on programs.' The result of the qualitative analysis showed how fans discuss the content of these thematic categories, expressing their 'pleasure' in watching and being a fan of Prison Break. This study discusses the major source of 'pleasure' in relation to the textual characteristics of American dramas, which are far advanced in providing strong emotional absorption and intelligent gratification due to their multi-threaded plots. Also, participating in a fan community provides fans with opportunities to share their passionate feelings and tastes, This study also finds that the recent Korean online fandom has more 'choices' and 'mobility' with the availability of diverse dramas, stars, genres, and origins of products.
